Sorry, bad article...

1) The AdAge article, which you rely on, confused the cumulative views of all 9 commercial videos with the one from Nigahiga. All 9 channels have 3.3M views together.
2) It's not viral, each of the 9 channels reached views that are normal for them. Even if the number of views appear to be large, they differ from "viral" views (reach/type of audience).
3) It's not a "smash hit" either. VisibleMeasures called it that because this campaign happens to rank 1st on their "viral video hits of the week" chart. Apart from that, the campaign was expected to reach over 10M views, according to an AdWeek article released before the campaign took off. That's not even 40% of the expected views.

Thanks for clearing that up! With that amount of data it might be interesting to see a scatter plot of the view/comment ratio of all videos, and the resulting correlation coefficient.

Agreed. Without the buzz prior to their shows there wouldn't have been 25M viewers in the first place. And probably not even the 5M remaining views. A 20% retention rate ain't that bad, considering the quality of the content...

On the YouTube Data API I experienced that they block the requesting IP for about 5 minutes after a certain number of uninterrupted requests (about 5,000 sequential requests). Thus I suppose they limit on a requests/minute basis. I never experienced a permanent ban.

You might be able to find more reliable info in the official API documentation or the developer blogs. E.g. the Google Chart API has a limit of 250k calls per day. http://google-code-updates....

Yes she was pretty hyped by those numbers, but I don't really know what to think of it. Sometimes when I log in, as soon as her show starts, it already says 200 viewers or so, but there are only about 10 people in the chat. This would mean that 200 people who received a notification mail visit her page instantly, but only 10 of those 200 are signed in permanently?! hmm... unlikely.

Actually it's an "unregistered" account which would have to be "claimed" in order to become a registered account. Unusual, but that's how Disqus rolls... I only wonder how her picture made it into an unregistered account!?
