All that is happening is that Korean officials are clamping down on bad exchanges that don't KYC or protect their customers, etc. Korea is not banning Bitcoin. This has been confirmed.

Re: How to buy South Africa’s newest cryptocurrency

Only for 15 minutes every Thursday :)

Re: How to buy South Africa’s newest cryptocurrency

The UBX tokens do not "become" UBU tokens - instead UBU tokens are given to UBX token holders, who still keep their UBX tokens. The white paper specifies this all in great detail, and the team would appreciate feedback.

Re: How to buy South Africa’s newest cryptocurrency

The UBX token does not decay. The separate, linked, UBU token does because it has to be deflationary. I've spent a lot of time with the UBU team and they have thought very long and hard about these dynamics.

Re: How to buy South Africa’s newest cryptocurrency

From the white paper: The UBX token does not decay, and that is what is available during the ITO. The UBU token is separate, although linked, and that is what decays over time (since it has to be deflationary to be effective in a UBI system).

Re: Preparing for the Bitcoin fork: what should you be doing?

Coinbase are a reputable company and I'm sure they'll do the right thing. It's impossible to predict exactly what will happen, so I've tried to make the options as close to binary as possible.

Re: Preparing for the Bitcoin fork: what should you be doing?

A great suggestion. Trezor is another option as a hardware wallet that will support alternative branches post-split. But I do meet a lot of people who are not technically savvy and afraid of storing private keys, in which case moving to, eg, Kraken is a next-best solution (or selling out).

Re: Preparing for the Bitcoin fork: what should you be doing?

Not a bad approach. Another to consider is keeping half on Kraken and the other half in a wallet with private keys you control. One possibility is that there will be a lockdown period on exchanges while they sort this out. Harvesting yourself can be hair-raising, however, but I suspect the community will quickly come up with good tools to help things along.

Re: Preparing for the Bitcoin fork: what should you be doing?

Not speaking for Blockchain, but a lot of Bitcoin companies are taking a wait-and-see approach because nobody is sure exactly how this will play out. My recommendation for Kraken is based on past experience with the Ethereum fork, but the safest play is to sell out and wait to buy back in. Of course, this does mean potentially missing out on positive outcomes in terms of price. Everything has a risk associated with it.

Re: Preparing for the Bitcoin fork: what should you be doing?

I believe that is a sensible decision. The one caveat being that current predictions have the fork happening in July 2017, and there may be strong upward movement in the price before then. I also have a high level of confidence in the Luno team to honour customer balances on a resultant alternative chain.

Re: Preparing for the Bitcoin fork: what should you be doing?

No, I don't think you're missing anything. I'm not happy to take the risk of them deciding not to support it. But, as you said, they may well do so in time. I'm trying to offer the best advice to readers. Until Coinbase commits to supporting a resultant altcoin, like Kraken has, I believe your Bitcoin will be safer elsewhere.

Re: Announcing Ghost for Journalism

Congratulations on 1.0 and thank you for all the hard work! I'm glad payments are one of the next focus-areas. There is so much happening in that space, with the most exciting things being blockchain-based. I had successfully used Changetip on my Ghost blog until it folded recently. Would be lovely to have a robust payment system baked in.

Re: Dinosaurs can't climb trees: why your company is failing at innovation and what to do about it

Thanks Bob :)

Re: Dinosaurs can't climb trees: why your company is failing at innovation and what to do about it

Yup. I think the telcos that appreciate their place as plumbers and act accordingly will be around for quite some time - or at least until Facebook / Google / SpaceX start providing ubiquitous connectivity from high altitudes ;) But they need to stop trying and failing on the services side. The game is over.

Re: Wearables

I tend to agree with you and this is where Sony, for example, is getting things right with a more autonomous smartwatch (although still not entirely stand-alone). I personally like it and I absolutely love the Note 4 (I even got to play with the Edge in Korea and think it has awesome potential). But the size makes it impractical. I need something I can comfortably operate with one hand, while I'm strolling down the street with a coffee in the other ;)

Also, my job is not to find the technology I like most, it's to give people good advice. For most people out there the iPhone 6 is a better option. Its camera is almost as good as the Plus and it has less niche appeal in the size department.

As an aside: I believe that two of the best phones of the year are the Moto X and Nexus 6, but I can't recommend them to South Africans as they are not officially available here and most people with get frustrated trying to get them on contract.

Re: Top gadgets of 2014

I disagree, but I won't change your mind :)

My phone of the year is actually the Moto X, but as policy I won't choose gadgets for my lists unless they are officially available in SA.

Re: Top gadgets of 2014

I almost picked this, but chose not to since it isn't officially available in SA.

Re: Top gadgets of 2014

Wow, it would be awesome to get gadgets for free. I get some to try out, but they have to go home after two weeks and I send them back if they aren't collected.
