And I agree with Kyle, if we don't set the bar high, who will do it for us? In fact, it's probably part of the job description. And you know that you'll sell those pots.
In our gallery at LibertyTown we see a substantial difference in attendance when we have group shows.Every one and their brother comes out to support each artist. I'm still overseas, but when I return home I will have time to respond more directly to this thoughtful post. There is no doubt that the original posting came across as mean spirited and I'm glad that Michael pulled the plug.
That being said, Don seems to once again be dismissive when he references Leach's grandson (I'm assuming that he means Johnny). and then provides no real argument for this position. Is there no place for simple, beautifully crafted domestic ware in his ceramic encyclopedia? Do we all need to 'push the envelope' to be relevant? And who are all these mediocre potters he speaks of? I admire Tom Spleth's and Donna Polseno's work, but once they've made the originals and then made the molds, couldn't their work be made just as easily by minimum wage employees? How is their idea any different than that of an industrial designer? Is it because only a select few have access to the words behind the work?
Over at Hannah McAndrew's blog today she mentions that Ceramic Review here in Britain has a disproportionate emphasis on 'Art Pottery' with a distinct lack of good ol' functional pots (I'm paraphrasing here). The same is true for Ceramics Monthly and Studio Potter, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I like ALL aspects of clay, from sanitary ware to pit fired work, but I think much of the writing on our blogs by potters is a result of receiving short shrift from those editors and curators that are in charge. Try to find a useful pot at the American Craft Museum in NY, or the Renwick in DC. I think that this may explain why there was so much emotion in response to the original post.
So, thanks for pushing us out of our comfort zone this week. I look forward to the continuing conversation.

Re: Sawdust & Dirt: Explanation from the Editor

Well said, Michael. I might write it on my own blog, something about being tired of the academic pyscho-babble that he seems to be seeking. I've tried to read his 'Georgette Ohr' stuff but I really grow tired of pots that require a thesis for appreciation. I think we make pots for fundamental human reasons. I write and read blogs for the same reasons...to connect with like minded people.
Interesting that your blog today does just that. Simple. Lovely.Intimate. Thanks.
And I, too, miss Penland. I wish they'd have me back ...
