They bring out the inherent good - whether that is helpful folks on a bulletin board, eloquent writers, ardent organizers, or just 'policers' - they may at times be almost 'invisible' - simply ensuring that the whole ecology of the community is functioning and growing well.

I think online community management is a bit like growing a garden.

Re: Be the Media Project: The Social Media Empowerment Guide for Nonprofits

Hey Beth,
I did see that. I actually got the meme from Terrence McKenna's video 'Culture
is Your Operating System: http://www.memeshift.com/20.... I think the idea of bringing it back to a 'community' as opposed to the generic 'culture' is that it humanizes it a bit and brings it 'closer' to a network of friends, allies, confidants, and colleagues - it's not as nebulous (or spacey as McKenna's vision;).

Re: Community As Your Operating System

Other people have been thinking about this too apparently, but inversely. I've already shared this post with a few folks and am working on building up my network too!

I've sometimes thought that one's network is like a whole operating system for accomplishing the things you want to do in life - except it's wonderfully powered by people, kind of like a hive mind, but without the creepy overtones.

"Community As Your Operating System" is a post I wrote about it:
http://www.memeshift.com/20...

Re: How to: Build a Social Media Cheat Sheet for Any Topic

Marshall,

Thank you thank you for this awesome tutorial! I read that post and thought it brought up some much needed criticism of our 'thanks for the add' online social networking. I've gotten random follows and adds from people where it's obvious that they are trying to promote themselves first, before they've even developed a strong base of content/value that isn't just 'me me me'.

There was a great quote from Bob Moog in Hans Fjellestad's documentary where Moog talks about how electronic musicians shouldn't forget the value of face-to-face with other musicians when communing/creating - it's an essential part of music/making for Moog. I thought this was one of the gems in the movie for me, much more eloquent than my paraphrasing here;)

I dug this link on CDM: http://createdigitalmusic.c...

Glad you liked the post!
