Musk and Beezos are putting big money on low earth orbit satellite based broadband Internet systems. They have FCC approval for thousands of small sats polar orbiting at an altitude of around 1000 kilometers. These LEO networks will have many terrestrial access points that link to the terrestrial FO internet backbone. Customer premise data terminals will number in the millions.

This cheap antenna news, and SpaceX patent apps, should scare the hell out of the big GEO operators and their investors. The point-multipoint network model is about to be challenged by the LEO multipoint MESH network model with cell phone like billing. Except for broadcast video distribution and program carriage, the future of GEO’s is clearly diminishing. Technology marches on!

It had the great pleasure to spend three months in PDX in the fall of 1977. I was on my way to Alaska to work on a federally funded project for the Alaskan government and the start of the project got delayed, so I had to hang in Portland. Loved the City, the restaurants and the women. Such a tragedy to see what happens to a great city when the left takes over city management. Seattle is screwed now too by the same disease.
