You are only as good as your service. If Zacuto had terrible people working their customer service they would not sell a lot of gear. Even if that gear is the "best." But the people over there are super great and that reflects on their brand. Its one thing to make mistakes, we all do. Its another thing to pitch a nasty attitude to your customer. Everything is about brand. And the Jag35 brand just took a major hit in my mind.

Re: Jag35 and Customer Service – An Oxymoron?

So why is Jehu tweeting for Jag35?

Re: Affordable FD Lenses For HDSLR Use

There is no crop factor with the Nikon/Nikkor lenses. I have not tried it. All I know if the Fotodiox version works great for me and fits several different types of FD mounts.

There is no such thing as an FD Nikon lens. FD is an old Canon mount type (like all the lenses shown in the video). Old manual Nikon lenses use the F mount. For more on that and what adapter to use with Nikons, check out this video: http://dslrvideoshooter.com...

And yes. There is no crop factor when using Nikon lenses on your 5D.

Re: Affordable FD Lenses For HDSLR Use

Someone on vimeo stated this

"the softening is a 100% flaw from the adapter design who targeted the mass produced f2.8 lenses with a tight aperture.
less common primes with faster glass wide opened suffer from ghosting and halos due to light being reflected back into the lens by the adapter's smaller relay optical opening.
however as you stop them down, parallel rays get through and make that beautiful image with a vintage character (softened by the adapter cheap glass)."

I am looking into other adaptors that are not as cheap, but so far all suffer from softness wide open.

Re: Affordable FD Lenses For HDSLR Use

Glad to hear you're enjoying it!

Re: Affordable FD Lenses For HDSLR Use

Thats what I would do. I am also slowly collecting a set of old Nikkor primes as well. They are great. Still affordable but not as cheap as the FDs.

Yeah I knew Bloom wasn't impressed with FDs. But what I think he is missing, is that optics aren't all about perfection in their geometry. Every lens has a unique characteristic. Color temps, how they respond to flare, their bokeh and these FD lenses are no different. Just because they are not sharp (get around this by stopping down/adding sharpness), doesn't render them useless in my mind. Would I use these lenses on every project? No of course not. Nor would I any lens.

But the greatest thing about these lenses, is that they give the masses a chance to CHOOSE lenses. Someone could by 5 of these and begin to experiment with lens compression and other aspects they otherwise would not have had the opportunity to try.

I only added sharpness once, and I stated so in the podcast. All the footage at the end has no sharpless added.

D-Focus is the bomb for a starters (great price too).

Sorry for the long reply :)

Re: Rod Raiser

When do you think this will be available again?

Re: Affordable FD Lenses For HDSLR Use

For aperture its like loosing .6 stops of light NOT DOF though. So you will still get depth like a F2.8 or F4 but it will only bring in light to show as F3.4 and F4.6

As for the crop, are you on a 5D or APS-C sensor?
Here is the math behind the crop factor:

For 5D:
(Focal Length) x (1.26)

For APS-C (7D, T2i, 60D):
(Focal Length x 1.6) x 1.26

So for APS-C cameras its pretty much double the FD lens focal length (i.e. a 50mm becomes a 100mm)

Re: Rod Raiser

Saweeeet! I have since used several different brands and the Fotodiox has worked well for me. Turns out the reason it didn't work for me was I was using a Nikkor S lens.
