The hotel was more or less empty and anyway asian guests don't like staying on the beach or swimming pool, so we had a lot of space for ourselves.

The room was nice, spacious and well decorated, I liked the balcony shower!
We hired a boat to go snorkeling at the far end of the bay, but I think it was very overpriced (600 RMB for 1 hour).
The staff were not at all fluent in english, it was difficult to have even a basic conversation.
We liked the hotel, we relaxed and liked the coral reef, but I think that for the same price you can find better hotels in Thailand.

- Sep 7, 2009 by Kay-bologna-zurich

Re: Mangrove Tree Resort Sanya, Mangrove Tree Resort Sanya Yalong Bay, Mangrove Tree Sanya Resort Booking, Sanya Resort

“Hainan Paradise”

First of all, if you want to book this hotel try to book it over a local travel agency. I booked over Sanya local travel agency and we got quite a good deal in combination with flights. Also don't hesitate to bargain and double check the offers. You can save quite some bucks. During check-in we were lucky and got a room upgrade which was really nice.

The hotel itself is quite good with a spectacular view from the lobby to the ocean. The private beach is equipped with lies and beachsoccer and -volleyball. Also there is a shower right when you enter the extensive gardens and toillets.

One thing that we didn't like so much was the pool. It was way too warm during our stay and doesn't have this "trench" at the fringes. So we were in there just one time and prefered the ocean after that.

Being located in Yalong Bay the Mangroove Tree is a bit off the spot, what can be a good thing if you want to enjoy a quiet stay. But as the more luxurious area with the Hilton and Shereaton right next to it, you also pay premium prices for food. That was a fact that I hadn't considered when booking. Here are some options that we used:

* There is a food mall with a supermarket at the Crown Plaza Hotel. Still expensive compared to normal chinese prices but acceptable. Try the Pizza or the Windtalker (not sure about this one, was something like that.).
* For only 50 RMB you can take a cab to Sanya City. There you have a much bigger choice and the prices are way lower. We normally went to the RAINBOW Bar & Grill. Very good and cheap western food, buy one get one free until 8pm and a patio where they have live music every night. Actually there are two venues of this bar. Rainbow 1 is in Dadonghai bay and the Rainbow 2 in Sanya City at Time Coast.

By the way: The managers of the hotel are a German and an Austrian. They are quite nice and if you have some questions feel free to ask them. They gave us the tip about the Rainbow.

- Dec 24, 2009 by ben_noire

Re: Mangrove Tree Resort Sanya, Mangrove Tree Resort Sanya Yalong Bay, Mangrove Tree Sanya Resort Booking, Sanya Resort

“Average hotel, great location”

We stayed at the Mangrove Tree Resort because we couldn't find any other hotels at Yalong Bay with a nice price...and we liked (but not impressed) with the hotel,. It has nice and clean rooms, nice lobby bar, and helpful staff. Nonetheless, please note that the staff-s knowledge of English is poor... so you might have some difficulties in communicating. The negative side was the food, (expensive and not good)... and there is no F&B service at the beach so you have to go to the hotel's bar (which is conveniently located at the beach) and order... but note that they don't serve from 4 o'clock onwards (?).

As a last note, don't forget that this is a very popular destination amongst mainlanders, so prepare yourself for the spitting, yelling and all other stuff that comes along with the package of mainland Chinese...

- Apr 7, 2010 by Cotai_Traveller

Re: Mangrove Tree Resort Sanya, Mangrove Tree Resort Sanya Yalong Bay, Mangrove Tree Sanya Resort Booking, Sanya Resort

“Very nice place”

Spent 5 days in the middle of march in this nice hotel. Great beach, great sand. It was a quiet season and the hotel was not full. A little noisy in the corridors when some people are talking or some children crying but alltoghether OK. Don't go too late to the restaurants especially the seafood one on the beach...nothing left in the aquariums!

Rooms are big with a nice view on the sea ( when chosen) . We stayed in a private villa that include two buildings, a private pool looking out onto a lagoon, private jacuzzi, and a lotus pond. The spa/masseusse staff were the best I have encountered.

All around, Banyan Tree Sanya is an incredible place. At the same time, there is still something missing here. Inside the villa, it is a wonderland, but the beach is not yet ready for tourism. The bar at the hotel is dead, and the drinks are good but not great. Banyan Tree excels at peace and tranquility, but do not come here expecting any sort of nightlife.

I would return here again for a quiet weekend of seclusion and tranquility. We also have had the pleasure of traveling several times per year in Asia for leisure. I speak Mandarin (proficiently, but not natively), while my girlfriend does not speak any Mandarin at all.

Let me start with some positives: First, the villas (we stayed in a deluxe pool villa) are very spacious and clean. The Banyan Tree Sanya appears to have resolved some of the more glaring service problems that colored the experiences of some of the earlier reviews. The fitness center is modern and well equipped, and the restaurants are quite good.

I will echo a previous reviewer by saying that the most salient benefit -- or detriment, depending on your point of view -- is the extreme tranquility (see review there; we stayed at the Ritz Carlton during the same trip to Sanya). The only time we ever even saw more than two other guests was during the check in and check out processes (the other time was during the buffet breakfast). I suppose that this should be expected, given that you are paying a premium for the privacy and all-inclusiveness, so to speak, of a private villa. If you are looking for anything other than the private villa experience at this price point, I would strongly suggest the Ritz Carlton.

The staff is very accommodating, although the quality of training and the English proficiency of the average staff member is noticeably lower than that at the Ritz Carlton, which is at a similar price point. The minor service issues that we encountered included: (i) we asked for certain dishes that we ordered for the in-room hot pot meal (a nice experience, by the way) to be prepared without mushrooms; this was not done) and (ii) when we wished to have a drink after dinner at the bar, the bar had closed early (the bar counter was literally covered) and the (very accommodating) waitress at the restaurant could not find the bartender. I suspect that these cut service corners is a function of how quiet the common areas of the Banyan Tree get.

The non-villa restaurant offerings are a bit limited at the Banyan Tree. There is a Chinese and a Thai restaurant, but the dearth of other diners at both of those restaurants makes for a somewhat self-conscious ambience. Unfortunately, the nearby towns leave a lot to be desired in terms of alternate dining options and the Yalong Bay resorts are thirty minutes away by taxi, so longer term visitors to the Banyan Tree are forewarned.

Note also that the location is somewhat remote, and taxicabs need to be called 15-20 minutes in advance. Additionally, the beach is not quite as compelling as that at Yalong Bay.

Some other general points/warnings to note: on each of the four trips that I have made to Sanya, I have made it a point to go into the nearby towns and try the local restaurants. The towns have an odd 1980s Russian feel to them and do not offer much of interest for the weekend visitor to Sanya. As in other cities in Hainan Province (and elsewhere in China for that matter), the streets leading into and out of these towns are lined with karaoke (KTV) bars, nightclubs and other neon-lit institutions of questionable repute. The local seafood restaurants are passable, but you will find better "local" Chinese food elsewhere in China; additionally, the local restaurants that I have visited have a tendency to overcharge to the point where you are probably better off financially eating in the resorts.

    * Liked — Quality and privacy of the villas
* Disliked — Limited restaurant and bar offerings and somewhat inferior location

- Jan 7, 2009 | Trip type: Couples by bk400 (Hong Kong )

Re: Banyan Tree Sanya Resort & Spa, Banyan Tree Sanya Resort is a Luxury 5 Star Hotel located in Luhuitou Bay, Sanya, Hainan Island.

Nice hardware but the ppl still need time

it was our first experience with the Banyan resort so I must say the family (of 7) were pretty impressed with the beautiful villas and the private pools (we occupied a 2-bedroom and a single room pool villas). i do agree that there weren't a lot to see in sanya but since we were a group of decent size and all adults we came up with gd enuf activities to entertain ourselves. actually we were happy to be 'left alone' and just relax the time in the resort. staff was accomodating with good attitude although service was a little slow at checkins and by the pool. also more training is still needed (e.g. forgot to serve tablewares and napkins with food). the spa was very nice - soothing almost zen felt ambience with good massages... mind you sanya was known to be a city of cheaters from taxi drivers to restaurants so better pre-arrange transports and do enuf homework if you do plan to venture out of the resort/hotel for some city sighting.

- Jan 31, 2009 | Trip type: Family by ShhConnie

Re: Banyan Tree Sanya Resort & Spa, Banyan Tree Sanya Resort is a Luxury 5 Star Hotel located in Luhuitou Bay, Sanya, Hainan Island.

Spa and food definitely need improvement

This is our first time to stay at a Banyan tree Hotel. We picked Banyan tree Sanya because of its location (very close to Hong Kong, only 1+ hr flight) and reputation of Banyan tree resort.

Airport pick-up and check-in service were smooth.

The villa was OK. We stayed in a spa pool villa with spacious bathroom and nice view of a fish pond overlooking the ocean.

There are basically one Thai and one Chinese restaurant. We had every meal in the resort but were fairly disappointed at the food provided. We won't say the dishes are bad but they were just not up to the expected standard of such resort. We don't feel any "heart" from the chef at all.

We tried a 90 min massage and a 3hr sigurature spa package on two separate days in a couple room. The facility, atmosphere and interiors of the room are OK. I was definitely disappointed by the 90 min massage I got on the first day. My therapist was very inexperienced and had a lot of hestitations during the entire treatment. My husband's therapist is good, according to him. I wonder if this happened only to me because one of the treatment is complimentary and so they let the trainee to handle it? In my opinion, I'd rather don't have any complimentary massage as such.
We got two experienced Thai therapists for the other 3hr spa treatment on our last day of stay. They are very experienced, have good technique... but just seems not very happy. There was no communication among us at all. They never told you the next step they were going to do or for how long you're going to stay under the cold showers( one part of treatment is to lie under cold showers after scrub ). They are not sensitive to our needs and feelings at all. Is that what one should expect from a banyan tree spa? If so, we'll never stay at another Banyan tree again.

- Sep 14, 2009 | Trip type: Couples by SweetieHongKong (HONG KONG)

Re: Banyan Tree Sanya Resort & Spa, Banyan Tree Sanya Resort is a Luxury 5 Star Hotel located in Luhuitou Bay, Sanya, Hainan Island.

It was wonderful!

I stayed here for 2 nights over a weekend last summer, and I would recommend it (with some exceptions).

Pros
- Absolutely large villa - I stayed at a 1-bedroom villa and it was so large! The bathroom was literally the size of 2 regular hotel rooms, and the living room is actually a pool-house and is located a few steps away from the bedroom!
- Large private pool and you even have you own jacuzzu (water not hot though, just luke warm)
- Large outdoor tub that could easily fit 5 people
- Great water pressure in shower area, and it doubles up as a sauna/steam room!
- Breakfast buffet was more than generous and food was amazing
- Spa services/massage was very good
- The buggy service was reliable and was efficient
- Lots of beautiful vegetation, trees, plants etc
- Close proxomity to airport

Cons
- Beach was absolutely filthy and disgusting! It was one of the worst resort beaches I have ever seen - lots of rocks, water was dirty and nothing to do
- You can see views of large-scale 40-storey uildings from the entrance/open space area, which kind of "removes" you away from the vacation/escape experience - I mean most people come to feel relaxed/get-away, and the views of these concrete buildings destroys the ocean/mountain view, as well as your mood
- It can be quite boring if you were to stay in the hotel without getting away as there is nothing to do in the beach - I recommend taking a taxi to Yalong Bay for water sports

Otherwise, I would highly recommend this hotel

- Jan 26, 2010 | Trip type: Friends getaway by kceesse (Hong Kong)

Re: Banyan Tree Sanya Resort & Spa, Banyan Tree Sanya Resort is a Luxury 5 Star Hotel located in Luhuitou Bay, Sanya, Hainan Island.

It's the place to enjoy doing nothing!

We went to the hotel during its pre-opening month and got a very good deal for the standard pool villa. And as our flight wasn't until 2050 they offered us a "day room" to use after check-out time - they couldn't give us a late check out as they were busy.

Thanks to all the staff who made our stay here very special.

- Nov 21, 2010 by rakesh18uk

Re: Banyan Tree Sanya Resort & Spa, Banyan Tree Sanya Resort is a Luxury 5 Star Hotel located in Luhuitou Bay, Sanya, Hainan Island.

“true relaxation”

+ huge beautiful grounds and gardens, very impressive lobby
+ best villas I've ever seen with most perfect bathroom of all
+ attentive staff
+ good breakfast

- beach is a joke

- Jan 14, 2011 by Thefall

Re: Sanya Travel, Sanya Hotels, Sanya Resorts, Sanya Travel Local Expert, we offers information about Sanya Hainan Island.

Pearl River Nantian Hot Spring Ticket: >>Special offer<<
- Rack rate: RMB198/pax, special offer at RMB150/pax.
** including admission/hot spring ticket and fish spa.

Book 1 day in advance, prepayment by bank transfer or pay pal.

Re: Sanya Travel, Sanya Hotels, Sanya Resorts, Sanya Travel Local Expert, we offers information about Sanya Hainan Island.

Pearl River Nantian Hot Spring Ticket: >>Special offer<<
- Rack rate: RMB198/pax, special offer at RMB150/pax.
** including admission/hot spring ticket and fish spa.

Book 1 day in advance, prepayment by bank transfer or pay pal.

Re: Pullman Resort Sanya, Pullman Resort Sanya, Pullman Sanya Resort Yalong Bay, Sanya, Yalong Bay, Hainan, Hotels, Resorts, Review

“amazing”

very nice hotel, great villa's good resort, has private beach and staff can understand english.

would recommend a stay..

though food can be a problem for vegetarians as they not many rest choice and 40 mins to sanya city..
- Jun 23, 2010 by sidhantjatia

Re: Pullman Resort Sanya, Pullman Resort Sanya, Pullman Sanya Resort Yalong Bay, Sanya, Yalong Bay, Hainan, Hotels, Resorts, Review

“Fabulous villa.”

Although it was a year ago, Pullman has left a lasting memory in my mind.

Location: Pullman is along the road where the other big hotels are located. This meant we were able to visit the other restaurants and spas conveniently. It's about 2 minutes by transportation from the beach, but we enjoyed our villa so much that we only visited the beach once.

Service: Very friendly staff. Although not all personnel were able to communicate in English, everyone was all smiles, which is universal. The manager at the restaurant was notably fluent and we enjoyed many meals there.

Cleanliness: Impeccable. (Because it's a big deal to me) There weren't any mosquitoes at all and it was clean throughout the resort.

Pros: Value for money. Great villa (w/ private pool), many common pools, quiet and exclusive, friendly staff.

Cons: Not walkable distance to the beach, few food/meal options, most of the staff did not speak English. (Also, you need to pay for high-speed internet.)

I highly recommend this hotel to people traveling to Sanya. Although the popular pick is the Ritz-Carlton, the villa at Pullman is definitely a more luxurious, private, and pampering experience.
- Jul 22, 2010 by pinkmeowmix

Re: Pullman Resort Sanya, Pullman Resort Sanya, Pullman Sanya Resort Yalong Bay, Sanya, Yalong Bay, Hainan, Hotels, Resorts, Review

“Be Sure To Get a Pool Villa- a Unique Room Experience”

Spent three days here with a traveling friend in April, 2010. Each of got his own pool villa. The pictures on the website do not do the villas justice. Each villa is really a fenced in villa with its own pool. I walked it off and it was 28' by 15'. This is a serious pool. Each villa is fenced in with rooms that must be 600 square feet. In addition, there is a separate pool house with a pagoda type roof, big LCD TV, entire glassed and air conditioned. There are two showers, one to shower off after the pool and a separate room shower. All super plush. There is also a pool lounge mattress with a roof. These are plush accommodations by any standard. The villas are arranged along small "streets" that seem to be patrolled by staff at all times so there is never a problem with service, which is excellent.

The Pullman is not on the beach. You must be taken to the beach by golf buggy. There is always one waiting. The beach is stunning. There is a beach bar there.

Only the front desk people speak English or any other European language though the restaurants have English menus. Some Mandarin certainly helps, but there are pictures on all menus.

The negatives were the restaurants and the fact that the place was empty. Having been to Sanya before, it seems that all of the western style hotels, which are far from Sanya, are pretty empty. So there is nothing to do at night in the hotel or in the hotel zone. Even the hotel bar closes very early, and the one at the Marriott nearby, while open, is also quite empty. Can't blame the Pullman for the lack of anything to do, but it's a fact.

Breakfast is very good and you should make sure it is included. Both western and Chinese food is available, and there is a huge choice. The grounds are impeccably maintained, with lakes and pools, man-made waterfalls, etc.

The hotel restaurants were overpriced and quite disappointing, so go to Sanya for dinner and after dinner activity. To get to Sanya you need to take a cab ride for about half an hour. Bargain for price if you know enough Chinese. There are plenty of cabs around. Sanya itself is a very decent town. Small by Chinese city standards, but good food and street life. It is bigger than it looks, so just pick a restaurant and wander afterward. The largest group of tourists are the Russians who escape here for a break from the winter weather. It is also popular with Japanese tourists, but tourism has had no effect on Sanya that I could see. While Hainan is a province of China, it is very distinctive. The island is quite large, and there are mountains and rural areas that are quite untouched by the outside. I visited the inland parts on my last trip here. No real history here that jumps out at you, but very nice, friendly folks who are still surprised to see Westerners in many places.

Hainan is sometimes called the Hawaii of China. It has truly beautiful beaches, with white sand like the Caribbean beaches. The beaches are empty, the water clean and beautiful. My traveling friend, who lives in Guangzhou, suggested we come here after my long flight to do some R and R and let me recover from jet lag. We did this the first time I ever came to China, and it worked then and worked again. Once ensconced in my pool villa, it was rest and relaxation at its very finest.

While I came with a buddy, it would be a great place for a romantic get away or, alternatively, for a family vacation. The villas are the way to go. You won't be disappointed.
- Jul 30, 2010 by Vermontman

Re: Pullman Resort Sanya, Pullman Resort Sanya, Pullman Sanya Resort Yalong Bay, Sanya, Yalong Bay, Hainan, Hotels, Resorts, Review

“Great Stay at the Pullman- loved the private pool”

The overall impression of the hotel is one of a luxury resort providing a high level of service. During our five night stay this standard was maintained.

We stayed in a villa room with a private pool. All the fittings were of a very high standard, the bathroom very luxurious with spa bath and we loved the walk-through wardrobe. The pool, the outside patio, courtyard and of course the room were spotlessly clean.

The little maze (beautifully landscaped) of villas, became easy to navigate around after some initial orientation, but when it is hot we recommend making use of the golf buggy taxi service as even the shortest walk will get you sweating.

The main hotel pools were beautifully sculptured, and when we were there, not being used by many people. Reception & check- out was friendly and efficient.

There is not much else around in Yalong bay, except hotels so we ate at the Pullman. Mainly we chose the buffet restaurant, which had a different theme each night. We enjoyed all of our meals. There was a wide variety and a high standard so it did not become boring, although the constant presence of the chocolate fountain was a continuing pleasure. One night we tried the Chinese restaurant. The food was very good but they could not manage to bring our courses together at the same time. I know this is usual in China, but they should be able to do this in a 5 star hotel.

The hotel does not have a beach front location, but provides a constant service via free golf buggies to the private beach. We did not find this a drawback. The beach was spotless & the sea was warm and had lots of waves. We enjoyed the happy-hour cocktails from the beach-bar.

We would certainly stay there again and just have 3 minor complaints:

1. The air-conditioning in our room was just about sufficient. Sometimes it got a little too warm. The maintenance checked it but said it was ok. I think it could have been better.
2. There was no air-conditioning in the main bar. In the evening it became too hot to stay there. We enjoyed the 2 singer\guitarists but we could not stay too long and noticed that other people felt the same.
3. There was not enough tourist information and when we asked at reception we were given misleading information about taxi-fares, distances & times to attractions. Much of this I’m sure was due to translation problems. Also, the hotel cars are much more expensive than local taxis.

I would repeat , that these were only very small issues and we would recommend staying here.
- Aug 18, 2010 by CouplefromCardiff
