I agree with you on the need for more diversity. In order to be able to bring in those from less economically privileged backgrounds, there needs to be enough sustenance within journalism to be able to let these people continue on in the field. This can only happen with greater support from the public, based on better appreciation of quality journalism as well as understanding that they need to start getting used to the idea of paying for good reporting, clear analysis, and all that good stuff. Citizen journalism, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook - these are all wonderful and enriching media for healthy democracy (notably what's going on in Tunisia and Egypt right now), but professional standards of quality journalism and fostering future generations to continue that public service - this citizen journalism cannot replace.

As much as I would like to believe that we will survive, every day I get more and more skeptical. I feel like there isn't appreciation for professional (investigative) reporting, or people take it for granted. They expect high quality of work for free and without realizing just what it takes for us reporters to deliver such news. Am I overreacting? Am I just being a pessimist?

It looks like I have highlights. My hair's lightened from all those childhood years spent in the Middle East. Or that's what I would like to think. I certainly hope it's not me aging.
