I would add Alcohol. I have counseled many couples over 20 years of pastoring and 98% of cases of infidelity all included excessive use of alcohol.

I agree these kids are not interchangeable. I really do. I am just concerned in the modern American church we are so worried that we are going to be numbered among the Pharisaical stone throwers that we only want to be the Jesus who says "I don't condemn you" forgetting that Jesus added to that statement "Go and sin no more"

Lewis says this in "The World's Last Night":

"For my own part I hate and distrust reactions not only in religion but in everything. Luther surely spoke very good sense when he compared humanity to a drunkard who, after falling off his horse on the right, falls off it next time on the left. I am convinced that those who find in Christ's apocalyptic the whole of his message are mistaken. But a thing does not vanish—it is not even discredited—because someone has spoken of it with exaggeration. It remains exactly where it was. The only difference is that if it has recently been exaggerated, we must nowtake special care not to overlook it; for that is the side on which the drunk man is now most likely to fall off."

Our country has a rich puritanical history that grew into unhealthy legalism, we as Lewis points out fell off the horse on one side. What I fear is that we are falling off the horse on the other side where God's love and justice are mutually exclusive.

One thought. Your whole premise of fund withdraw is faulty. Why can't I take my funds and give them to compassion international who also help small children.

Jamie I agree with your Bible scholar friends. Feeling you way through the gospel does not always end well. The problem with feeling your way through the gospel is we tend to feel we are right and everyone is messed up. That is not the gospel. The gospel tell us that the problem with World Vision is and problem with our world is you and me. We all need a savior whether we feel like we do or not.

I completely agree and completely disagree. I think we agree on the points you made here are a couple other things I would toss in the ring for discussion.

1. Writing my own curriculum taught me to condense truth not regurgitate truth. I had to study and wrestle with things that you "should" even with bought curriculum but if people are honest they take and just do it as it is written. If I didn't start writing my own I wouldn't have learned this skill.
2. When I started I had no budget. When I say none I mean none. Curriculum can be expensive. Many small churches can't afford curriculum that's why online resources that offer free curriculum is a huge help.

Great post. Sobering reminder. Did you mention to McRae that she produces some great content? That's what I tell my kids "do that handstand again that's going to get me 112 likes on instagram" they look at me for a second than stick the handstand like a they were in the birds nest in Bejing.
