There was a mention in the article about riding on horse and buggy to get across, so maybe...

I feel bad for the parents as well. It's kind of hard to imagine watching your kid be struck by lightning right before your eyes...=/

I tried looking for any bridges built around that time period, but I haven't seen anything. I didn't look that in depth with it though, so it could still be plausible.

The Civil War idea seems pretty logical as well, though by the looks of things, it seems as though it were a combination of problems happening to the business before the Smith's decided to close hotel...financial reasons, property destruction (due to the lightning strike), Charles' death, etc.

Trent, was the hotel completely destroyed, or did you find anything left standing? (besides those two little houses in the 8th picture)

Not exactly about this specific hotel, but here's an article about hotels of that area during that time period. They mention "elaborate series of trolley lines" and "water taxis" as ways of getting to and from different islands.

That's weird...all the way up in Canada... If they are the right Smiths we're looking for, why would the family be buried so far apart from each other?

Maybe they moved there after they closed down the hotel?

I THINK I found more about the father. Born 1792. Built the hotel in 1832. Son of Joseph Ludlam, whom in turn, was the son of Judge Henry Ludlam...

...that is if this is the right Richard Smith.The article said something about the hotel being built in Cape May, New Jersey...=/
