I think the core problem with Facebook (which I wrote about in November http://www.startupnorth.ca/... ) is that they just aren't good at being a platform and so far they really haven't delivered on building value for either themselves or for their users.

Facebook is also a closed platform. While they talk open, have the app platform, etc,. the business strategy that wraps it all up is very closed. They are giving people incentive to build value WITHIN facebook, but they aren't letting people build value elsewhere, while attaching to facebook. That is where their attempt to be a platform falls down.To be a platform for other people's business, you have to be as open in your business strategy as you are with you dev strategy. Facebook only let app developers sell their own ads because Facebook knew they couldn't do it themselves, that is destined to fail.

I was, in a slightly more belligerent way, saying the same thing. There has to be a value to using these tools and it really seems like more of the "Enterprise Social Software" vendors think the best thing to do is just to slap on whatever things are working in the wild and expect them to have some sort of impact inside an organization. It seems that every time, things get hijacked by the needs of the org, and what the person wants gets cut out. The entire point though is that the person is in control and feels comfortable contributing... If you take that control away, then you lose all the value.

There seems to be a disconnect between the needs of a large org and the needs of a person,. and the entire reason that social tools have been successful is that they fulfill the needs of the user, and nobody else. All sorts of stuff comes from that,. but that is the start.

It's cool that they are launching it on Friday, because it will no doubt give us a preview of iPhone pricing. In fact, my guess is that it is getting launched now because Rogers can keep more of the revenue from each user from an n95 than they can an iPhone, so now there is incentive to offer the option where before there wasn't.

Nobody who I know really complains about the size too much. It definitely isn't a "back pocket" sized phone, that is forsure.

Rogers is saying that Nokia Maps application use will be charged per KB if it uses any data.

They are just mentioning that they have a fiber optic network. Which is the network between the switched. You don't get Fiber to your house, just the usual DSL,.

I am about to switch startupnorth.ca to discus,. I think the biggest thing about threads is that it makes it a lot easier for the blogger to connect with the readers,. which encourages more people to comment,.. A thesis you are proving out here on AVC.

I am switching away from my iPhone back to a BB (thinking about a Nokia N85 or 95) purely because of txt/email, and surprisingly, Twitter.

My wife also thinks that the iPhone is almost too geeky,. and she is going for a crimson curve.

I think there is a reason that USENET, and now Google Groups has been such a successful platform for groups. I think that because they focus on the content/conversations so directly, that users are able to get a lot of value out of them.

I find a lot of Ning sites, for example, are set up to make sure you know that you can do X things with the Y features that the group has enable. That causes a lot of friction for me on the way to the real meat, which is what my fellow group members have posted.

So much enterprise software does this now as well. Putting everything ahead of the conversation.

I agree, and should have said so in the post. Mark deals with larger companies though, looking for an order of magnitude more capital than we normally talk about, so in that case I can understand his position.
