You're absolutely right: No one outside of Michigan distinguishes between Ferndale and Detroit, Oakland County and Detroit, etc., etc. I moved here from Pennsylvania six years ago and can attest to that.

In fact, when I do tell people where I live I make sure to say the Detroit Metro. After which you can qualify it with the name of the city/county. And although not as bad as when I would simply say "Detroit," people still wince and ask if I dodge bullets on a daily basis.

Before when I would say Canton the response was either "where is that" or if I didn't mention it was in Michigan, they thought I lived in Ohio.

I'm not sure if it was you who left the comment on the blog you linked to above, but someone has aptly coined a new term: to pull a "Martha Reeves" = to have such a Detroit-city-centric attitude that you neglect to recognize the greater Southeast Michigan community at the (ironic) expense of the city you love.

I agree wholeheartedly with Dan on this issue. The report given by the Clements Group was entirely unpersuasive. There are enough local educational institutions in the area to meet Erie County and the surrounding county's needs.

If there is an issue regarding cost prohibiting attendance by lower income individuals, then why not institute a scholarship program to address financial needs and/or work with area colleges and technical schools to fill in the gaps for fields of study not available. That would make much more financial sense than setting up a brand new community college.

Erie County Community College = Boondoggle.

Paul, I don't think there is any doubt that current home prices, interest rates, and the federal home buyers credit all make buying a home appealing. The problem is that prospective home buyers have a larger concern -- whether they will still be employed in the months ahead in order to pay for the mortgage on the new home. The economy continues to shed a significant amount of jobs each month while others are experiencing pay-cuts and other burdens affecting their income.

Bottom line is that no one wants to buy a home they don't know if they can afford in the months ahead. That makes this a risky time to buy.

Finally, I agree with you that a home purchase is a big deal and it will be the largest purchase that a number of individuals and families enter in to. Because of that reason, I would strongly suggest home buyers pay for a home inspection but more importantly, involve an attorney to review the transaction. Not to attack Paul or any real estate agent, but I'm bothered by the fact that real estate agents are motivated to close since that is how they get paid. To me, that is a serious conflict of interest that needs to be addressed by retaining legal counsel before signing the purchase agreement.

I'm a Mets fan here in Detroit and Pudge would be a very good pick-up for the Mets -- he's a leader, great catcher, and an experienced veteran. The downside is that his performance has diminished over the last few years due to his age but he would be a better choice over Castro and probably over the Schneid as well.

I have to say I do miss Paul Lo Duca.

I suspect a judge look at the detriment Joyce has caused to the courts -- an institution integral to the order of society -- and instead of adding years to a sentence (which he can't do), he might just be persuaded to order the maximum allowed under the law.

I think 4-5 years is very appropriate in this circumstance since a message needs to be sent to judges that they are not above the law.

Maybe Inked has a point but something like that will require the legislature to pass a law adding additional penalties for lawyers, judges, and law enforcement.

Despite those who brag about how wonderful it is to obtain beer/alcohol anywhere, and not just a state liquor store/beer distributor, is only telling half the story. It can be quite obnoxious to see "party stores" (alcohol, cigarettes, lotto -- vice stores) 5 to a street block. It's ugly and doesn't do much for the community (underage drinking and crime for example). There is something to be said about restricted alcohol sales. I hope that Pennsylvania finds a balance and that municipal governments explore reasonable zoning restrictions in conjunction with restricted liquor licenses.

From news reports, I heard there already is a system in place to take names and on the third rescue you are fined. These fishermen are probably used to going out on the ice in these conditions but failed to recognize there was a south-westerly wind blowing that day which, by some locals, is an indication to never go on the ice.

When we made the decision this summer to publish a weekend News and Events edition (Satruday and no Sunday) we weighed a number of issues (see the Sept. 5th announcement here). The major reasons include: (1) weekends are slow news days and publishing on Sunday was rather skimpy, (2) readership on the weekend is much lower than the weekday traffic, and (3) it gives Mike and I a day to take a break. Weighing all those factors it just was not worth putting the time and energy into a Sunday post. That isn't to say we won't resurrect a Sunday N&E but it is unlikely.

The antibiotics won't help unless the cold becomes a nasal infection or the like. If it makes you feel any better (it doesn't for me) but I've been sick with a cold FOR THREE WEEKS. Runny nose, cough, etc. Of course I'm also fighting off a bacterial infection so my body is trying to fight two different infections at once.

All you can do is drink lots of water, vitamins, and something I started which seems to help, saline solution to clear the sinus passages.
