Golden Globe rules dictate that the film must have English dialogue. It had English subtitles, but Japanese dialogue with no English dub when submitted for consideration. A pity, as I would have liked to see which feature the HFPA would have chosen between Miyazaki's film and Frozen. Of the three that were nominated in the category, I had little doubt Frozen would come out with the Globe. I think this reflects on the leadership of John Lasseter at Disney, who was, of course, at Pixar when their best films (so far) were released. The acceptance speech even nodded at this.

Re: http://neverboreblog.tumblr.com/post/8950243752

I think you got enough of it to at least know what to say. It works *right now*. Yes, for people that write down their Facebook password. Yes, for people just finding out what this "The Twitter" is all about. How do I know? Because I know these people - and they are in some of my circles - and they are using it - and they are not confused - and they actually like it - and they are the absolute opposite of me when it comes to techie-geekiness. Mainly these people are members of my family (but not all of them), that are already using it to keep up with what's going on with other members of my family in a way that we simply haven't up until now. We even tried via Facebook, but that just kind of didn't work all that well. So far, this does. I've learned things about what's happening in the lives of my family over the last week that I probably never would have known otherwise.

From a technical standpoint, I haven't even had to explain how to do things more than once - and some of these are people I've had to send an email to just so they could reply and have my email address added to their contact list because I got too tired and frustrated trying to explain to them how to copy and paste it into their email app (from a document in that Facebook experiment).

I really don't care about all the "Facebook rival"/"game-changer"/"Twitter killer" stuff. I just know that it works... right now.

(By the way, the idea of taking a picture of *all* of your Google+ circles and putting all of those people in one place defeats the entire purpose of Google+ circles. ;-)

Re: The Google Plus 50

Hehe - Wait, Chris... why can't I +1 this comment? ;-)

Re: The Google Plus 50

"Sub-circles" functionality already exists - you can easily place circles inside other circles (just drag and drop). It's just not called that - and you are actually less limited in relationships of circles this way than making official "sub-circles". Think Venn diagrams.

Re: http://neverboreblog.tumblr.com/post/6971898645

Ah Jim. Skype, on the other hand - at least via the mobile app on my Android handset - makes me want to bite my face off the call quality is so bad. (Plus - using Google Voice on my mobile with unlimited data eats 0 minutes out of my cell phone mobile minutes - confirmed with service provider.)

Could it be that some accounts have this call quality problem and others don't? Seems odd as I would expect calls to be routed all over the place as needed by demand so I can't imagine an account always going through the same server - but I could be wrong. If my calls were as bad as yours are, then yes, I'd have to give it a pass - but they're not, so I use GVoice for business all the time.

Re: How To Start A Movement

This email account is no longer being checked on a regular basis. So - what "works in social media" is what works with people, period. It's just a matter of applying what we've learned in life to new channels and remembering there are real living, breathing people on the other end of the line.

Re: 4 Things I wish the iPad Kindle would do

If you want to see the future of ebooks and epublishing, check out the Kno... It would be nice to have the option to display the physical book page number, though. However, what about books that aren't published on paper? How do you cite those? Surely there is a standard for that (I haven't bothered to search yet).

Re: What are the top 10 ways newspapers can add value to a local community?

I think what local, small newspapers need to do is very different from what large, national papers need to do - but they both need to make changes. Local papers need to do exactly what I've heard some other people say here and elsewhere - concentrate - really focus - on hyperlocal news, events, etc.

I can't recall where I read this, but I think it was in Made To Stick (Trey, you've probably read this story too & might recall where it was) - about a very small local paper that started making money and succeeding because the management insisted on a) covering absolutely everything that happened *locally* and b) used names, names, names - included every name of every person involved in every event that they possibly could. Why? Because people like to read their name in the paper - and the names of people they know. Sales shot up.

National/large papers is a whole different ballgame. I've cited The Guardian UK as an example before of doing something that I think is on the right track by creating an easily accessible data platform from all of their stories. That's something that large newspapers have tons of but very few, if any, are monetizing - there's immensely valuable aggregate data in all those stories that are just sitting in the archives now.

I also agree that the fate of newspapers isn't all that important, in itself - it's the fate of journalism that's in danger and is vitally important.

The other thing every newspaper should do is listen to people that are much smarter than me.

Re: Knowledge is not power

Excellent post as usual, Trey. Seems like I need to hurry up and make my followup vid to Ideas Without Action vs. Action Without Ideas, because I think, taken on its own, it could possibly sound as if I'm making a case against what you're stating here (or restating from Hill's message), that "knowledge without action is useless". The key, I think, in part, at least, is defining what we mean by "action" in that statement.

Oh and "Facilitators of Significance" is fantastic, by the way - love it!

Re: 10 Google Services That Don’t Get the Limelight They Deserve

Some more Google services that don't get enough (or any) attention, but are worth checking into (some of these are Labs projects, so they may or may not last) - Google Moderator (www.google.com/moderator) , Google Squared (www.google.com/squared), Google Fusion Tables (tables.googlelabs.com) - and yeah, Aardvark is great, I use it all the time, really wish it would get more traction.

Re: Six Counterintuitive Truths About Enterprise 2.0 Adoption

Great list of general principles, but I especially like the questions about value at the end.
