Extension gems that require system libraries won't build without the system libs installed and we have no plans for automating that process at gem install time. We're in the process of building a list of gems that depend on system libs and plan to add support for them based on demand. I hadn't seen geminstaller before your comment but it does look quite similar to what we're doing here. We'll take a deeper look and see if it makes sense to converge. We could, at the very least, read the geminstaller YAML manifest so that projects that use it don't need multiple manifest files.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;@arisbartee Yes. Each app / git repository has its own private gem repository.
