I'm probably misunderstanding something, but the switch and write intents seem like locks to me. "The switch cannot be concurrently accessed – reads and writes of the switch are strictly ordered." "As a final rule, there can only be a single write intent on any key. If there were multiple concurrent transactions, it would be possible for one transaction to try to write to a key which has an active intent from another transaction on it."

Re: Dealing With Death

Thank you for sharing this.

Re: Fanfiction.net, Graphs, and PageRank: Oh My!

This was a fun read, thank you!

Re: Building A DVS Timecode DJ Setup For $20

Mixxx lead developer here. Thanks for the mention of Mixxx!

Just a quick note that we've got our latest release, Mixxx 1.12.0 right around the corner. We're planning a beta release April 1 and a final release May 1.

After over a year of development, we're packing a lot this time around:

* 4 decks (including 4 vinyl control inputs if you want to use 4 turntables)
* Master sync
* Key detection and pitch shifting (independent of tempo) for harmonic mixing.
* 4 effect units for built-in effects (this also introduces all the necessary plumbing for LV2/VST, effect send/receive, and advanced chaining in a future release)
* beatloop rolls (now you can create beatloops and automatically jump to where the track would have been if you hadn't enabled the loop when you release it)
* Resizable skins (yes, finally!)
* Vinyl control deck passthrough (switch to real vinyl temporarily)
* Auxiliary inputs that pass through to the master mix.
* Custom key notations (pick between traditional, OpenKey, Lancelot notation or a custom one)
* Beat jumping and loop move
* multiple library folders
* mono output and input support (easily do the Master/Headphone trick on one stereo output)

Along with over 100 performance, quality and usability improvements.

You can monitor our progress towards 1.12.0 here:
https://launchpad.net/mixxx...

And, if you are a programmer you can join us and add whatever features you want! Mixxx is a community effort created by DJs, for DJs.

All of our code is on GitHub here: https://github.com/mixxxdj/...

Re: Keylock In DJ Softwares Compared: Serato DJ, Traktor Pro, Virtual DJ

Mixxx 1.12.0 will release with the RubberBand algorithm for time stretching and pitch shifting (previously we were using SoundTouch). http://breakfastquay.com/ru...

RubberBand has a command line tool you could use to test it out. Mixxx is adding key detection in Mixxx 1.12.0 and will have the option of using KeyFinder or the QM key detector. We have a core team of probably 5 or 6 people and a community of 100+ contributors who send us patches infrequently. The problem is that we're all volunteers working in our spare time so maybe 5-6 people's spare time adds up to about 1 full time engineer.

Re: Review: Mixxx 1.10 DJ Software

Yup -- that's right. There are 37 hotcues per deck/sampler we just don't have enough room in the GUI to put buttons for them. They are addressable via HID/MIDI or keyboard control.

Re: Review: Mixxx 1.10 DJ Software

Hi there,

Good idea! Mixxx already has a pretty advanced scripting interface based on Javascript/ECMAScript. We built this for supporting MIDI controllers -- all you need to make a super-advanced preset for a MIDI or HID controller is to write some simple Javascript. We're looking to expand this into a general script interface for use even when you don't have a MIDI controller.

We're building an effects framework that will include the ability to write your own effects plugins. Our sound-decoder system is already modular and supports audio decoder plugins.

As for an actual native-code plugin system (instead of Javascript) for extending Mixxx's functionality I think since Mixxx is open-source there is much less of a need for this relative to proprietary software where the code is not available. We're a very welcoming community and instead of putting your awesome new feature in a plugin, we'd rather you build it directly into Mixxx so that every Mixxx user benefits from the new hotness. To some extent this is how Mixxx got where it is today -- most new features are written by people who are just scratching their own itches.

Re: Review: Mixxx 1.10 DJ Software

Hi DJTeeOh,

Mixxx is available free on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. If you're interested in Mixxx, here's what we've got coming down the pipeline:

Mixxx 1.11.0 is in beta! We are getting ready to release the stable version very soon. You can download the beta here:http://mixxx.org/forums/vie...

Among the new improvements:

* Massively improved beat detection (like.. 10x better than 1.10.1! and it can handle non-constant-tempo beatgrids)

* 3-band colored waveforms

* HID controller support -- support for HID script (our scripting system for MIDI controllers now adapted for HID) and preliminary support for a lot of HID devices (Pioneer CDJs, Eks Otus, WiiMotes, Sony Sixaxis, Traktor Kontrol F1, etc.).

* Set-log / history feature so you can keep track of your set lists automatically

* Revamped/improved AutoDJ -- (yea, I know.. not that interesting to the DJTT crowd ;) )

* Point-and-click MIDI mapping -- the old MIDI learn wizard is gone and the new one is point-and-click based.

* Advanced search -- try a search query like "artist:'Com Truise' bpm:80-110 played:>5" and you get tracks whose artist matches 'Com Truise' and with a BPM between 80-110 and that you have played greater than 5 times.

And to respond to Markkus's comments -- 4 decks and an effects system are in the works and on track for being included in Mixxx 1.12. (also a master-sync system, built in key detection, and more!)

Hope you like it! As always, please hit up our

Forums: http://mixxx.org/forums

IRC Channel: http://mixxx.org/irc.php

Wiki: http://mixxx.org/wiki

for live help from the team and documentation.

If you run into any bugs, please file them in our bug tracker
http://bugs.launchpad.net/m...
and we will get them fixed.

And finally, if you're a programmer or artist and are interested in working on Mixxx please join the project! I'll warn you, it's addictive.

A new skin someone is working on w/ the fancy new waveforms:
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Re: Google Says Knowledge Graph Has Led To More Searches

Nit: the image is not a search link. Beyond this, most ripping groups add their own custom metadata or watermarks which make a simple fingerprint of the file "unique". If you upload a copy of music that is bit-for-bit identical to one known to be produced by a pirating group then you can infer the provenance of that file.

What you cannot do is prove that the user doesn't own rights to the song/album in question via other means -- e.g. they bought the CD but it was more convenient to pirate it rather than rip it.

Re: Editorial: My 5 helpful tips to be a better DJ

What's with the advertisement for Mixed in Key with no mention of two great free alternatives: Rapid Evolution (http://www.mixshare.com/sof... or KeyFinder (http://ibrahimshaath.co.uk/...

Re: Facebook was never a big geek site (Google+ needs to pass more than the geek test)

I invited all of my friends (~50 non-technical people) and they are all using it regularly.

Also you say people like it because everyone (e.g. parents, acquaintances, etc.) isn't on it.
