It's super cute. Maryrose Wood is also the nicest person on earth.

I don't think it's so much a question good at everything as much as having character traits and interests beyond the person, as anyone, even the most love-lorn, will--that's just being human. Felicia, of the above book, loves writing poetry and NYC; Ruby Oliver is into thrift shopping and playing head games with her therapist, so on. From what I've read about Bella...she likes reading? Maybe?

There are protagonists in YA literature that do the vulnerability/losing-themselves-in-a-partner thing while still being well-rounded and interesting characters: the Ruby Oliver Series by E. Lockhart, Down to the Bone by Mayra Lazara Doles, Sex Kittens and Horn Dawgs Fall in Love by Maryrose Wood, Freak Show by James St. James, to name some off the top of my head.

I've had it happen all my life--I finally took up a Middle Path (a la Buddhism) approach to it--I don't have any expectations about anything, and I don't assume reactions or support from anyone but myself. It's hard and it involves a lot of distracting myself (that's how I read so much), but the efforts pay off. :D

I watched the making-of, and iirc the scriptwriters didn't know anything about riot grrl or third-wave feminism going into it, which I think is a little...counterproductive? You really couldn't get a former zinester or head of a Riot Grrrl chapter to write this thing?

I enjoy the hell out of it, I just wish it had more heart, you know?
