If this has been compliant then GDPR is worthless.

Re: Gravel, Adventure Bikes, Endurance-Road… Stop The Madness, They’re All The Same

I agree in that I don't know why anyone would buy one of each. But the very loosely defined categories helped me find the kind of bike I wanted. I spent a while searching Google for "like cyclecross but for touring" or "comfortable cyclecross" without success. Only when finding out the terms adventure and gravel did I find pot load of bikes to consider.

You yourself have to resort to using the name adventure towards the end of the article (despite the use of scare quotes) in order to describe the subtle differences of a bike. So although marketing and PR are always hilarious, I don't think you should be quite as dismissive of the usefulness of this language.

But do I wish the language was better, letting me easily narrow down my search for the right bike for me? Very much so.

Re: Why Twitter must blow by 140

If they do go ahead with this kind of thing, which I agree they should, I would like them to have the long post attached to a 140 char tweet (just like they do with an image) rather than the article be an extension of the article itself.

So, rather than show the first 140 chars of the post with a 'show more' icon, you'd see a tweet introducing / describing the post. Like people do now when they link to a blog post. This way the bite sized 'scannability' (sorry) of my timeline is not damaged.

I value greatly being able to quickly move through tweets which is why I am glad my twitter client defaults to collapsing media like images.

Re: The Bullet Journal: why analog task management doesn’t work

Certainly valid points about expending time and effort on things software can do for you.

I don't know if the bullet journal system will work for me, but I do know that electronic task management don't. I've tried many, and every time they just gather dust.

I hate typing on my phone so there's a huge barrier for me personally, to actually writing stuff down on the go.

Moreover, electronic task management systems tend to play to my laziness by being too clever/efficient. I set them up, add a few tasks here and there, then leave it, it gathers dust, gets ignored.

I honestly don't know what any software could do to stop me doing that. I'm certainly out of ideas.

The advantages for me personally of something like bullet journal:

I find writing, the physical act, enjoyable. That's one thing that bullet journal can do for me, encourage me to actually capture my tasks in a way software just can't.

I find the transcribing to a new sheet of paper very helpful for keeping what I need to do organiser in my head. Many task software packages offer this kind of thing in an automated 'plan your week/day ahead' feature, but again, it's that I enjoy writing that encourages me to keep up with it.

It's a very odd distinction that I can't explain much better but there you are. I understand that software is more efficient, but for me, in this use case, efficiency is the enemy.

Re: kids of today - Blog in isolation

K&R was impenetrable for me when I first started out. I couldn't find any scripts to convert to markdown as appose to Textile and it wasn't worth creating one for the number of posts I had (-10 geek points for me). Some of my url did change, by choice. I wanted to tweak some of them for neatness sake and some I realised were a bit wrong. Wasn't an issue for disqus because you just upload a CSV file of: http://old.url, http://new.url
http://old.url, http://new.url
http://old.url, http://new.url

Worked like a charm.

Re: farewell Paul Scholes | Blog in isolation

I'm especially fond of the story of him being asked who his favourite player of all time was in 2002 and him replying with "Frankie Bunn, scored 6 goals in a league cup tie against Scarborough once."

Re: the joy of Markdown | Blog in isolation

You had me until emacs.

Re: Budgt 2011: Let's call the 40p rate what it is – the basic rate

"40p is the basic rate."

That is an absurd thing to say.

Re: Human beings aren't very good at listening

It may be a "fact" that the crime rate has gone down in the UK.
