You should have continued your search and learned that "intelligentsia" refers to a (largely self-selected) group of "intellectuals." It does not in any way imply a higher intelligence, except as presupposed by the members of the intelligentsia.

All it takes is a few debates with self-appointed members of the "intelligentsia" to realize that they are, as my beloved mother put it, "book-smart but street-stupid."
A college degree does not imply that you are more intelligent than others; but it does apparently guarantee that the holder will BELIEVE himself/herself to be superior, justified or not.
