Let's be mindful that the ignorant may not read the body of a story nor the byline , but simply the headlines.
"Spanish Lawmakers" , "Chinese Virus", "Palestinian Bombers" and such headlines in a country where we lack knowledge of to differentiate between citizens living in the United States and foreign countries is one direct cause of hate crimes in the United States. Let's keep in mind that we live in a country where we refer to most our citizens of latino origin as Spanish or Mexican, where most of citizens of Asian origin are referred to Chinese, and most of our citizens from middle eastern origins are referred to as terrorists. In a country where hate is at an all time high it behoves us to be cognizant of the interpretations and possible fallout of our headlines.

Dear Douglas Hall,

It's a very sad and painful story, one that is too often overlooked and almost always brushed off.
With that said, let's get something clear- what happened it's not called call privilege, it is called racism.
Don't misunderstand me I'm not calling you a racist, I'm just correcting your use of the word privilege to inadvertently disguise and misinform readers of what it really is.
Privilege can be understood as a state of being and living with particular, and at times very specific, benefits. We can discuss the history of privilege and how it became manifest due to racism--but that's a longer conversation.
When evoked in most adult conversations the word 'privilege" is not an attack, nor is it a judgment on that state of being or the inherent benefits that accompany being of the white race, it is most often, among the educated, simply a way to bring light to a meaningful and impactful difference in some nuanced instances between a person that is white and a person that is not.
White-privilege isn't necessarily, or inherently racist. A person maybe simply ignorant of the benefits of their race. Basically it is the absence of living in fear, or at least the fear number consequences others are born into; particularly, but not exclusively, the consequence of being born non-white.
As a person of color, I have my own definition of 'racism"...racism is what's left when you run out of politically correct terms to mask your prejudice in an attempt to make yourself comfortable.

I applaud you for bringing up a very messy issue in our community. A community that needs to accept that because it may share a common "sexuality" does not mean that we are free from the ills of society, racism inclusive.

Now all we need is to believe that Castro Brothers won't turn around and re-sell the goods at a nice profit and pocket the money (like they do with their own countries' argi-produce). Leaving the country in the same state of poverty.

U.S. makes money, Castro makes money! Seems like an opportunity to help the Castro Brother's get a little richer!

Who knows maybe we can then sell them U.S. arms from with the money they made from our agri-produce. Then we can make even more money. Great way to stimulate the American economy.

The Cuban economy is not the only thing anemic, so are the people.

We really should see what other Tyrants we can do business with! Eh, Todd?
