Actually, BillO's taking GE to task is one of the only good things I've seen him do in ... a long time. Even those of us who find Fox suspect and as prone to spread lies and disinformtion whenever it suits them, should support anyone in the news biz who has the temerity to challenge corporate giant's like GE on what they all-but-admitted was corrupt and illegal.

The St.Louis story is, characteristically, more GOP disinformation and blatant lies. Even if you watch the entire GooTube video the wingnuts are touting and listen to the audio track, you can tell that there was no assault or effort to silence a dude selling flags on the sidewalk (not someone who was speaking out about healthcare). There was some kind of altercation between a couple of guys and a lot of aggressive baiting and accusations flying from the rabid GOP peanut gallery standing around trying to gin up a fresh video to provoke right-wing outrage. Good luck w/ that. Mean old MSM, not buying our agit-prop and insisting on "facts"

Kudos to Todd, msnbc.com, NBC, etc. for taking a different tack on the economy by reporting closely on the situation in Elkhart. It's helpful to see a body of work that looks at how a real town and it's residents are coping w/ the recession and political situation and their coverage has been execeptional. It's especially interesting in that Elkhart is NOT Obama country (I think McCain got something like 70% of the vote in that county); aside from the imported trols, the residents are thoughtful, if critical, and have good insights on the challenges facing the rest of the nation.

Whine, whine, whine. No doubt that dopes on the left can be duped and misled. But the point here is that Fox is part of a relentless "astroturf" process that turns half-truths, distortions and blatant lies into populist demagoguery that then gets reported as "news events." The right is masterful at this -- from swift-boats to the latest anti-Obama jeremiads at town halls. The left tries, but generally sucks at like manufactured outrage (Michael Moore gives it a good shot). Heck, it took the 8 years of W to generate a comparable, sustained level of disgust and anger (and that was real). Nothing compared to the hate machine that is the GOP/FoxNews.

They have some say, but no, they don't really get to make that call, as it comes at a great cost to the entertainment division and company as a whole, since they won't be serving ads during the time the event is taking place (meaning they have to make up that money somewhere else. The hard costs for the news division to cover it are relatively small in comparison.

That's true. The plan is to send people out of the city to places where they have family who are willing to take them in, rather than have them live in city shelters. It costs something north of $30k per year to house a homeless person in NYC, where as airfare to most places is a fraction of that. And I don't believe anyone is being coerced into leaving -- it's an option for people who have the family connections and want to leave a city in which they aren't able to stay afloat. Seems pretty smart -- and humane -- if so. Deutsch isn't the only New Yorker who thinks its a good alternative to warehousing souls in overpriced hovels.

Perhaps you've heard of the "one-drop rule" in which has defined anyone with ANY non-white blood in their family tree as being black (or jewish or native american). I'm not saying it's right; but for generations, that's been a fact of life for a significant portion of the population. I believe something like that went on your native deutschland, no? Regardless of the truth, the Gates-Crowley story is about perceptions and a very long and bitter history of discrimination and fear. And it's as much about "white" people as it is about "black" people -- we're in this together, like it or not.
