You make GREAT points which were made in that time (e.g.- booker t. Washington) and were in book and discussion but didn't make cut! Anoossobke difference in this time period was the huge debate and dissent.. and the realization that liberating, was actually conquering.

BTW the EMT's gave the intravenous lines but one told us recently
just dump sugar in the oj. I love the cake icing suggestion but worry that I
would be the one eating it!!

well THAT was inelegant on my part wasn't it?! Our search is on the fritz but after that terrible story of several young blacks drowning at a pool party we spoke with a black scholar about yes, the segregation in pools, but long before that, the association by slaves of water with fleeing enslavement.. and here is a sample from a television report at that time:

"If you trace history even further, you'll find a history lesson of enslavement.
Those trying to break free often crossed rivers to get to freedom. Slave owners took note and developed ways to instill fear of water in slaves."

Again. pretty inelegant on my part! But there is history.

OK I think we might not have been clear enough, but many of the children
are being fed by parents but eating processed fatty foods.. in large part because they
live in a food desert ..and don't have access to fresh nutritious foods.

Graham, thank you so much for letting us know about Ian.

The stories are legion ( Karyn and Alex just shared that when he first
arrived from London there was a mix up on his hotel room so when they came in for the morning edition shift they discovered him sleeping on ths station stoop. No doubt, in his black suit. It probably also was that he just wanted to get in and get going)

To his family, we're so sorry for your loss.
