Pixar’s most powerful symbolism yet, i think.

ena, let me explain something to you,
pixar has gotten so good at conveying the pain and sorrow of its characters that it may seem like the stork is suffering, but its just dusting itself off, even with the missing feathers and broken beak.
what i saw in the animation was a friend who had a job to do.
the cloud's job was to make the nasty animals in the world. and the stork was responsible for getting them to earth. they work together and they do their best.
at the end the stork sticks by the cloud not because he forgives all the abuse, but because he knows its wrong to leave just because the work is hard and painful. if he left it would be up to another stork who might not be as understanding. the film isnt as much about "love" as it is about "friendship". it's not abuse, its just the situation.

as for Carl Fredricksen, i just loved the way that he was always reminded of his past by the weight that he was pulling behind him, the weight of his love and his life. the film was about respecting your elder's old stories, because even though its old news to them they are actually the most beautiful stories ever told. people really have spent their lives together and they really do meet when their kids. but now, we take this for granted and we reject our elders as being old fashioned. the struggle represents the modern old person.

but, obviously the other end of the story is the relinquishing of that past and that weight. whats so great about that, is that he starts as an old cranky man trying to keep what nobody values anymore, but at the end he's a young man who doesnt even need his cane and he's ready to get on with the rest of his life.
and think about it, because Ellie never really got her adventure, or the one from her childhood, she was indebted to him for providing one that meant just as much. so there all these great legitimate layers to the plot. and in a way she also got go that adventure as a house.

i loved the throwing out of the furniture, which was kind of like saying that their house really was full. i loved that because it was simple but that was all for the sake of those two characters. like Carl did it all in honor of her memory.

the boy is cool, because Carl has more to live for. i know the evil dogs sucked, but "Dog" was really was funny. Charles Muntz was fine, but it would have better if he was just an ultra positive figure. like if he helped Carl come to terms with old age from his experiences. if he was there at all, he wasnt very important.

mainly,
it would have been cool if this was just another "strait story". if you know what i mean.

Re: whim some, lose some - Pixar’s most powerful symbolism yet, i think.

or was that the one with the clouds making the animals? i loved that, one of my favorites actually.

Re: whim some, lose some - Pixar’s most powerful symbolism yet, i think.

your kidding right?
hes dragging his house and his life behind him, life isnt easy and neither is this. his eagerness to take it with him makes his journey all the more difficult and hes trading an easy passage for what he really wants. the house keeps him dry, which is symbolic for Ellie's love. do i have to explain the fire scene?
not to mention that it floats above him, which is a god theme.

what are you talking about? its the first pixar short to be directly tied in with the plot of the movie, and they did it so well. that short alone made everyone cry.

Re: zizek on love, and what i've understood love to be my whole life

this is all well and good, but what does he perceive as love? how does he describe the act of love? what exactly is he talking about? im becoming more and more skeptical of love philosophy. i have more eye opening moments when i talk to people i know about their own experiences.

Re: whim some, lose some

yep, he ruffles my socks.
sometimes, it doesn't even look like he believes what he says.

Re: http://www.carolinemartin.name/post/234284577

its existentialism, its infinity, its the cosmos, its everything Caroline.

Re: Once Upon A Time, or, A Story of Betrayal

tell us how it goes?

Re: Buchino

you know, Human Clay was pretty good.

Re: whim some, lose some - beaglebot:
