Contrary to what some people say about banner advertising, I believe banners ads are still very much alive and well.

However, there are as many bad banners as there are good. I feel it's extremely important to choose very carefully the banners that are placed on a site/blog. Some banners can be very distracting to readers and a big turn-off. Equally as important to choosing the right banners is, as you mentioned, testing and tracking.

Hi Eric,

I've been using Twitter for about a year and a half and learned quite a lot about my followers. The points you made are spot on. If you want to have any success as a marketer on Twitter, it's crucial to first build relationships and trust with your followers. It's also beneficial to seek out questions your followers may have and provide answers when possible. It don't hurt to ask a few questions of your own.

The worst thing you can do is constantly bombard your followers with sales pitches. That is a sure way to loose your audience. Always provide good tips, resources, etc....especially when it's free. When you come across a product that you feel will benefit your followers, go ahead and "tweet" it. When Twitter is used properly, it can be a great asset for anyone's business.

Very informative article.

I spend lots of time trying to learn and implement all I can with regard to SEO. The problem is, every time I think I have a handle on it, they change the rules:-) Since SEO is such a crucial element to having a successful site, I'll keep testing and trying all the new methods and strategies.

I agree with everything in the article and I'm very familiar with the effectiveness of a personal call. My only concern is; have you tried getting someone to leave their phone number lately? I think people would rather have a root canal then to give up their phone #'s :-) Nowadays, people are constantly bothered by phone solicitors and if the number is not recognizable on their caller ID, it is ignored or hung up on.

Even though your intentions are good and you want to build a solid relationship with your customers, using the phone is a challenging task.

Hi Eric, I think you already know my feelings with regard to affiliate marketing;-) It's a great business that anyone can get into. There's virtually no risk and little or no money is needed to get started.

As you mentioned, there are many benefits as an affiliate marketer but it still requires a lot of work if you want results. If a person is willing to work hard, be persistent and have patience, the rewards can be significant.

You are absolutely right about being patient. Getting more traffic doesn't happen overnight and it's something that needs continual work. You gave some great methods to increase traffic and I would say that social networking has become a favorite of mine. Sites such as Twitter and Facebook can be excellent sources for additional traffic as long as they are used properly. Your main goal with those sites should be building relationships and trust and they will come. ;-)

Unfortunately, there are still lots of people who get taken in by all the hype of gaining instant wealth or making tons of cash overnight. Sure, there may be a few individuals who can make those claims but that is not the norm.

As you mentioned, over 95% do not succeed with their online businesses. As soon as those people find out that it really takes lots of hard work, determination and patience, they give up.

With the right training and the proper mindset, it is possible to earn as an online marketer and the rewards can be substantial.

I know you'll be successful in all your internet marketing endeavors. Just remember to stay focused and not get side-tracked by information overload. You have all the necessary ingredients to make it online. You have the drive, determination and creativity to make some serious $$$.

Oh, one other thing; you really should get rid of the Steeler's cursor. I find it very distracting especially since I'm a Giants fan:-)
