One thing I would like to add though, which you briefly highlighted is, dazzle them with your research and ideas.

So if you shoot a mail first, giving them 5 ideas they should consider. What you feel they can do better and maybe 3 points on how to go about it. It should surely catch their attention.

Re: Five Reasons Why Corporations Must Move From Social Responsibility to Social Innovation

One other name apart from GE that comes to my mind is IBM, with their Smarter Planet initiatives.

Re: 130 Ways to Fund Your Social Venture

Ramit Sethi's I Will Teach You to Be Rich Scholarship might be an interesting add to this list. Here's some more.

1.Add the word "social" to everything you do, it's obvious why this would work, no? One would instantly become a magnet, until others jump on this bandwagon.
2.Start evangelizing everything which is remotely cool. The word "enthusiast" has reached it's limit. Evangelism is the last refuge of the enthusiast.
3.Quote Seth Godin/Hugh Macleod when ever you can to impress people who you encounter the first time.

Re: Small is Beautiful, Small is Cheap, But Do the Poor Care? | Blog | NextBillion.net | Development through Enterprise

Prof Aneel Karnani of UMich, talks in his post Romanticizing the Poor (published in SSI and leading to a huge debate between him and Late CK Prahlad on this blog) about how a bad economical decision by the poor harms them much more than the rich. Everyone till 14 is a celebrity, 15th is CNN followed by some more celebrities.

One point which I sort of didnt agree with was celebrities using twitter to directly engage with the masses. Most Indian celebrities (in fact most celebrities anywhere) still treat twitter as a broadcasting tool. Check out Shahid Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor (whose profile is fake I presume) Padukone etc, no replies.

Only a handful actually engage, and those too aren't the A-list celebs, like Gul Panag.

What do you think?

Re: Stories from Sarvajal's Turf

I think it's agreed by one and all that the moment you sell something, no matter what the price, the poorest of the poor will find it extremely challenging to afford it.

So in that regard, one cannot ignore the role of philantrophy/aid, which are indeed essential to such sectors.

However, it doesn't belittle the work companies like Sarvajal are doing because they are providing superior service, be it in terms of delivery or quality of water and targeting communities that didn't have access to clean water and (even those who were paying a far greater price). With a model like this they are going deeper into the pyramid if not the very bottom.

A little besides the point, but they have also created around 500 jobs through their 130+ franchisees

Re: Students: Start Your Social Ventures Today!

Dear Moses,

The Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership along with the alumni association at my college BITS, Pilani, in India started a course last semester called Sparks New Ventures which helped students launch their start-ups and provided them with mentoring and avenues for funding. As far as the invention is concerned, it still reduces the human effort to a considerable extent since one can wash all the clothes at once, instead of the manual process where one washes the clothes one by one.

It saves on electricity since its mechanical and hence also sustainable and doesn't require any resources apart from human resources (and the detergent I suppose).

And yes, health care and transport have tremendous opportunities in villages, but so does FMCG and energy and a lot of other sectors if priced appropriately.

Re: Staff Transitions: The NextBillion Team Continues to Evolve

Everybody,

Thank you for the very warm welcome. From what I hear 75% of their primary care centers have been able to sustain themselves and the rest 25% of them which aren't able to sustain are being run from the money that the remaining 75% get. While they have been getting sufficient grants, they still charge based on affordability.

Re: Mee Nathuram Godse Boltoy - I am Nathuram Godse, Speaking

Its a gripping play.
