The other option is to use company-mode which has built in rope completion for python files. My own setup which includes flymake to provide a live "pylint" presence in a python buffer is here:

The -s didn't work. This simpler "myedit" did it:

#!/bin/bash -l
emacsclient -c $*
if [ $? -ne 0 ]
then
emacs -daemon
emacsclient -c $*
fi

unfortunately on debian, it just runs another emacs even with the preload already run. I'll try and debug and follow up.
