As a 30 year old male who has lived in Halifax most of his life I understand maritimers are a little reluctant to change but we are in serious need of new development with taller buildings in this city. We pay higher taxes then any other province because we have less people working private sector jobs. We need to build this city up, attract new companies to open offices here and keep our younger generation from moving out of province. Lets be real with each other people...the development and progress of this city has been failing for 30 years, it's time for a dramatic change

Re: Skye opponents call project ‘very dangerous Trojan Horse’

What many people are failing to recognize is that the baby boomer generation is inching closer to retirement every day and in the next 15 years Nova Scotia is slated to lose 35% of its workforce with not enough people to fill the jobs. For Halifax to work we do need a more pedestrian friendly city. That being said, underground parking as mentioned above would help provide space for both people who commute via car from outside of the downtown core while also promoting a culture of people whom live downtown. I recently visited Cardiff in the UK and their city centre is blocks of sidewalks only. Shopping, restaurants and businesses thrive and really drive people to want to be downtown. Halifax downtown looks so rundown compared to most other cities in Canada and worldwide...we need to do something quick.

Re: Reshaping downtown for pedestrians

well put!

Re: Reshaping downtown for pedestrians

How is it undoable? Look at Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Mississauga, Vancouver, Victoria...they all have areas that are pedestrian only. We have that here in Halifax on Granville St. All you need to do is grow the space...not undoable at all.

Re: Reshaping downtown for pedestrians

"An abandoned downtown core would be easier to drive through"...this is why our city is failing. Emera as a privately owned company isn't required to use any of the power from this deal for NS rate payers if they pay for the project on their own. The NDP government was trying to get in on the deal with having the project funded by rate payers so we could get a cut of the deal. The NDP was looking out for us. Everyone is hating on the NDP government yet we had a balanced budget this year, taxes are going down and there has been more development in Halifax in the past 4 years then there was in the 20 years before that. They can't get everything right as quickly as we tend to want but things are moving in a forward direction in Nova Scotia the fastest it has since I can remember (and I'm 30) and I don't think anyone can argue with that?

The problem with NS Power is the fact that they are privately owned...they are a company trying to earn a profit, you can't fault them for that. It wasn't the NDP government that allowed NS Power (a necessity that all Nova Scotians need) to be privatized...that is what needs to be fixed. Either have NS Power government owned or allow other companies to enter the NS market so Emera doesn't have the monopoly on us that they do.

Re: Expert: N.S. needs fiscal boost

Alberta Bound...all you do is complain and moan.
