Usually that is because there is security on the PDF that doesn't allow modifications. We respect security settings by disabling tools on the ribbons accordingly.

Hey Don,

Does your PowerPoint document have large colorful or image rich backgrounds? That could be what is causing your PDFs to be large in size.

www.pdftoword.com is a 100% free online service. Not only is it better than those other sites you are referring to in that respect, the quality of the conversion is miles in-front too.

The delay in receiving your converted Word document back from our http://www.pdftoword.com service is due to the enormous response we've had to it. We're continually working on decreasing the wait time for delivery, and a big update in the coming week should resolve any delays beyond 5-10 minutes.

If the original PDF was an image based PDF (that is, there are no text, image objects, just one big image for each page), then you will get the same results in the Word document (our service will convert the image based PDF into an image based Word document).

We will be adding OCR capabilities to the service later on in the year, which will detect this and perform OCR on the images to provide you with an editable Word document.

We recently updated the file size limit to 12MB. We also recently upgraded the net connection where the files are being delivered from, so time to delivery should be improved.

There may have been a backlog of conversion jobs whilst we were performing this upgrade, which would delay your delivery. Let us know if you don't see it in the next few hours.

It doesn't need to take up a lot of space. When embedding fonts during PDF creation, you can choose to only embed the characters that are used from that particular font. This is valid in the PDF/A spec too (that is, you can choose to subset the font rather than fully embed it).

Ahh yep, that would be why.

The limit will be 12mb for the near future, we may increase it down the track a bit. The same technology (PDF to Word) is going to be available in Nitro PDF Professional 6.0 in the next few months. This will allow you to do the same conversions on the desktop (without any file size limits obviously).

Thanks for your comment. That is the same as the first option we provided in
this article. The term for it in the industry is "re-frying" your PDF. You
can do it by printing to almost any virtual PDF printer.

It relies on there being content in the PDF file that can be identified as a
table. It doesn't just dump everything from your PDF file into an Excel
spreadsheet, it intelligently detects tables and extracts *only* the tables,
so you don't get an Excel file filled with junk.
If you tried a PDF that has tables but it didn't convert, please provide us
with a link to the PDF.

What settings are you using in the Create PDF from Scanner dialog?
Try using 150 DPI as the Quality setting.

One of the issues here at the moment is that we don't fully support RTL
languages. They will display perfectly fine on the screen, but say for
example you try and edit text, we cannot detect and support the RTL flow.
