The existing sarcophagus was built very rapidly as an emergency measure to prevent an even greater long term release of radiation than occurred during the explosion.

It was built remotely and with the best engineering that a day or two of preparation could provide. As a result even while it was being built, it was considered to be structurally unstable. Some reported plans at the time were to encase the reactor building in a cube of solid cement.

Here we are 25 years later and essentially nothing has been done to provide a permanent solution to the problem, even though it was recognized even during construction that what was being done was inadequate.

This disaster is not just a failure of the reactor operators but the 25 year delay in implementing a permanent solution illustrates the perpetual human failure of acting rationally to avoid problems, gambling for time to save a few pennies here and there, and generally acting irrationally by avoiding the response to real problems because they are hard.

For those who don't remember, the military sent in soldiers to shovel core debris off the roof of the reactor building because the radiation was too destructive to the electronics of the robotics immediately available in the emergency.

One man would run onto the roof, move one Shovel full, and then retreat, seconds of work, and a lifetimes worth of radiation exposure.

Those were brave men, - along with the other workers - for whom we all should salute and thank.

A global economy powered entirely via nuclear power - presuming a maximum population of 15 billion people consuming energy at U.S. levels of energy consumption, would require the construction of some 200,000 1 Gw reactors world wide.

Several hundred reactors would be needed in Iran alone. 20,000 nuclear power reactors in India alone.

Presuming that human nature does magically change, these 200,000 reactors would be subject to 1 Chernobyl type accident every couple of years. Improving reactor safety might make that a Chernobyl every decade or so.

What agency will police those reactors, their design, operation, safety standards, and track each gram of fuel and spent fuel through the fuel cycle?

Millions of people would be required to maintain that oversight. Could each be trusted to act in the self interest of everyone rather than their own self interest? Could each state be trusted to not use their nuclear power program as a source of nuclear material for fission/fusion or dirty nuclear weapons?

Given the response to Iran's decision to master the nuclear fuel cycle, and the 25 year delay in Mankind responding rationally to Chernobyl, it is self evident to me that Nuclear power has only limited applicability to the problem of global energy production.

I wasn't aware that chemicals caused nuclear changes.

Can you tell us what chemicals to wash lead with so that it will be transmuted to gold?

The radiation is mostly gone now. But if you were to walk into the reactor building you wouldn't live very long.

The chernobyl reactor facility will be dangerously radioactive for thousands of years.

What comes out of a reactor is billions of times more radioactive than what went in.

Greed causes enough problems in this world without blaming it for Chernobyl.

The Chernobyl accident was caused by operator failure. The operators grew complacent with the reactor, and they either didn't know, or didn't have the scientific knowledge to know how the reactor would grow unstable when operated at low power and the control rods removed.

100% human error that due to human ignorance, is 100% guaranteed to happen again.

This is less than the cost of a big mac per year per American.

There are 2.2 million Americans employed by the federal government. a 40 % reduction would equal about 1 million employees,

Presuming they are paid $50,000 a year on average, that would translate to a saving of 50 billion dollars per year. and reduce the Federal deficit from 1,500 billion to 1,450 billion.

Proving once again that Republican Americans can not perform or apply basic grade school arithmetic.

Note that firing all federal employees would reduce the deficit from 1,500 billion to 1,400 billion
