I plan to upgrade to an A5 in the next couple of years, but only of it's a petrol engine. Electric cars, with a range of perhaps 600KM, which gradually drops to 480km as the battery ages, and long waits to recharge, will never attract me, particularly considering the impact on the environment in mining and processing the rare earth elements needed.

Re: DiCaprio on climate change: 'Vote for people that are sane'

Of course he'd know about climate science, being and actor and a high school dropout.

Re: Poll: Most Californians connect drought, wildfires to climate change

So I'm hearing that climate change is causing drought. I'm also hearing that it's causing floods. I even read recently of an area that had seen no changes, and it was blamed on climate change. 10 years ago we were told our dams in Australia would never be full again. They've since overflowed twice. The Arctic was supposed to be ice free by 2013. Eight years later there's still over three million sq km of ice. Antarctic ice continues to grow, with no respect for the predictions. Polar bears were going to disappear - they have been thriving since hunting was restricted. By 2013, parts of California were supposed to be under water.

Can anyone wonder why it's had to believe the predictions.

Re: Health District Climate Change Project Seeks Residents’ Stories | Zip06.com

Global temperature has increased by about 0.9 degC since 1860. It's not something we'd notice. Given how much the temperature changes day to day, this is insignificant. I've been around for over 70 years. I remember as a kid sleeping on the beach to get relief from the heat (I haven't had to do that for decades). I remember floods, fires. Nothing has changed.

Re:

A few months later they overflowed, which was not unusual. So which is it going to be? More or less rain? Planet Earth is stubbornly refusing to take any notice of the climate predictions.

Re: World Ocean Day 2021: This is how climate change may alter 10 of the world's natural wonders

Interesting heading "may". The Arctic was supposed to be ice free by 2013, then 2015 etc. The media and some scientists blame CO2 - an almost insignificant greenhouse gas compared to water vapour, that varies all over the place. Many other scientists try to tell us that anthropogenic CO2 is not having a significant effect - I say "try" because the media refuse to support them, and even technical journals refuse to publish their work. Universities shy away from them because it upsets their research grants.

Ask any climate scientist what the temperature should be doing as we come out of The Little Ice Age, and the answer is "warming".

Re: Global warming? I really wrote this when I read "fires unprecedented". This is not true. In 1975, 15% of Australia was burning - ten times the area of the recent fires. The difference is that the recent fires were closer to populated areas, so there was more damage. Plus, since 1975, we have more populated areas.

Re: Sea level rise by 2100 could be double previous estimates, scientists predict

It's getting more expensive for all properties.

Re: How Climate Change, Other Factors Stoke Australia Fires

I should have said :Stevenson screen"

Re: Sea level rise by 2100 could be double previous estimates, scientists predict

So explain to me, if it's so good and cheap, why countries that use wind and solar the most, also have the highest electricity prices in the world, and rely on adjoining countries with nuclear and coal to back them up?

Re: Sea level rise by 2100 could be double previous estimates, scientists predict

So if renewable electricity is cheaper, explain why the countries that use it the most also have the most expensive electricity in the world. Australia has drought and hot weather every few years. We have a history of huge bush fires, and while the recent fires were very severe, much the same can be found going back to 1851, on numerous occasions. Severe drought followed by a hot summer with strong winds.

The real experts here tell us that it has little to do with climate change. The main problem is lack of good preventative burning, so as not to upset the "greens". I know of people here who have been calling for years for Councils and state government to clear huge areas of fuel buildup in bushland, and have now lost their homes.

We we had our last big fires in 2009, the Royal Commission recommended increasing preventative burning from 1% to 5%. It didn't happen. It was the same in 1939, when a Royal Commission was held.

Now, to do any clearing, land owners have to make an application, which probably goes to a committee, which forms a sub-committee to investigate the environmental impact. Eventually it might be approved, with so many limitations and restrictions, and risk of heavy fines, that it's all too slow and hard.

Don't tell me cigarette butts don't start fires. I've seen a whole paddock go up within minutes after I saw a cigarette butt thrown from a car onto dry grass.

80% of our fires are started by human activity - either arson or negligence. Therefore, perhaps the increased population has something to do with it?

The aboriginals had their methods of managing fires. When the time was right, they did preventative burning. They didn't send applications and wait for approvals etc - they just did it. Their methods preserved the wildlife. Now, the "greenies know better" with the result of huge loss of human life, property, bush and wildlife. People here aren't happy with them.

As for it being hotter here, that's only because high temperature recordings from decades ago are discarded because "they must be wrong", even though they were in Stevenson chambers.

People who try to shift the blame to climate change here (particularly politicians) are now being shot down by the media, which is now listening to the experts.

Re: Frozen II and climate change should be hot topics at the dinner table

Great - if there's so much evidence, can you direct me to just one, please. Remember, we're talking about the hypothesis that positive feedback (eg further warming due to increased water vapour) will dominate negative feedback (eg cooling from increased cloud density.) It's not whether increased CO2 can cause warming - this isn't the issue.
