You know what I hate is the ignorance some contributors post around race and implying that this crime reflects collectively on the Hispanic community. It is as ignorant as believing that all of the white Middle Aged pedophiles routinely caught on "To Catch a Predator" reflect collectively on the White community. The "cesspool" you believe Gilroy is becoming has as much to do with the White criminals that reside in Gilroy as much as it has to do with the Hispanic criminals who live in Gilroy. both are as likely to commit crimes adn victimize each other because any rational person can see they are the dominant groups living in Gilroy.

Gilroy has had crime as long as it has existed and it is only a cesspool if you include the ignorant racist who reside there now. The Hispanic community is not collectively responsible for the crimes of individuals as the White community is not collectively responsible for the White Middle Aged pedophiles that are routinely are caught on "To Catch a Predator". Not to defend "those" parents because we are very active in our daughters education but educators and administrators are equally complacent and/or incompetent. After 10 years in this school district it never ceases to amaze me the quality of teachers allowed to still teach here in MUSD. Me and my wife have often been seen as a problem for questioning eradict behavior from teachers. Not to mention incorrect homework assignements with lists of mispelled spelling words and discouragement doled out to our children when they attempt to challenge themselves by wanting to do higher than their grade level reading. I was in the GATE program in GUSD as were both of my siblings and we regularly were given higher than our grade level reading and writing assignments.This led to high test scores, much better grades and competency tests that went through the roof. I dont see this anymore in the current school system. It is no longer the Modus Operandi and that needs addressing. I defnitely am not speaking to those teachers and administrators who go above and beyond on a dialy basis because teaching is their passion. As a Youth Intervention Worker I have met both types and sadly our educational system needs revamping on both ends. The teachers union and school administations must stop protecting and defending bad teachers and curriculum though I am not sure if these new policies are the correct strategy for doing this. Educational spending is never a waste of my tax dollars and yes to all the conservatives reading this, you are not the only tax payers.Please spend my tax dollars on education but at the same time hold those accountable who are not worthy of woring in education.

Without union labor building the place you live in, preparing your food, stocking the shelves at the grocery store or even manufacturing the overpriced environmentally unsound vehicle you drive your pampered spoiled self would be lost and unable to survive.The elitist in our community need to come down a couple of notches and understand that they don't exist in a vacuum. Without the people who support their privileged lives with their hard work there would be no country club for them to lounge at and they might have to actually do for themselves for once.

You should try and read the police blotter more often if you read at all? The latest police blotter has 11 non hispanic names. This is second time I checked in 3 weeks and both times the majority of the names were non hispanic. The thing about most bigots is that are usually also stupid and lazy. I think its high time we practice some prevention and intervention programs in our city. We have built spectacular community centers that could outreach to these young people. Also it is true parents should become more involved but so should our local schools. Its a shame that LOHS and GHS has done the bare minimum to engage those young people and intervene in their lives. Most of these young peoples families are home owners and tax payers its high time we spend some of the tax revenues of the Latino citizens of Gilroy and Morgan Hill on programs that can positively impact our youth. I have worked in San Jose for the last 10 years with at risk and gang impacted youth and intervention and prevention programs are what has kept the Gang Problem in San Jose from blowing up into what we see in Oakland and Richmond. Latino families should become more involved and not allow either the school district or police departments from placating them or discouraging them from being more involved in the academic lives of their children or in the decision making in our community. We make 59% of the population of South County including Morgan Hill, Gilroy, and San Martin its time we elect more school and city officials to address our children's concerns. San Jose is not East LA and we should try and adopt whatever strategies they employ to improve the social conditions in our communities. If we don't we are missing the mark and will never resolve these issues. For all those who blame ignorant bigots who think that this has to do with Latino culture or race consider that we all share this same country and same future so why not wise up and invest in American youth through intervention and prevention programs. Prisons are not the answer and will bankrupt us all if we spend all of our money trying to build more of them.

Let me enlighten you Mr. Knapp as to who the Nazi's were and are currently in my country. Fascist advocate a corporate state where labor and government are controlled by the corporate elite. As of late corporate leaders are steering our nation in this direction. I know you are fond of one liners and accusatory assumptions where you somehow spout one liners such as "Kennedy would have loved Reagan" as if they were true. This is typical of reactionary crackpots who hold on to right wing principles like their at an old time religious revival. I don't know whose been ling to you about taxpayers but you should check your sources. According to Mother Jones Aug. 2008 most of the taxes in this country are paid by the middle class and working class not the wealthiest 1%. NPR had an economist on in 2007 who said those California residents who make $10M or more per year don't pay any taxes. They can afford to hide their incomes while the rest of us fit the bill for Wars and more deregulation and tax cuts for the rich. As for hanging myself I won't, the last time I checked this was a free country where freedom of speech is still protected under the Bill of Rights.The Patriot Act still hasn't trumped the constitution though if conservatives have their way it will soon. Luckily for the rest of us political variety in opinion and philosophy is still a good thing and should be encouraged. While demagoguery such as what you spout is quickly falling out of fashion. Good Riddance!

Its going well but would be better if these "neoliberals" who expect the "Free Market" to miraculously save us from supposedly evil government programs such as unemployment, medicare, social security would actually invest tax payer dollars on the actual tax payers. Union workers, and labor are the majority of tax payers while these business types hire high priced law firms and accounting firms to find loopholes and tax shelters to hide the wealth they generate from the American market. Keynes who was very anti-communist believed that government should invest in education and social programs for their labor force or citizens in other words. This would keep us from losing jobs to outsourcing and we should increase regulation to ensure that big business contribute their fair share to our country in order to get access to the American market. Still the undisputed best market in the world. Oh yeah infrastructure isn't cheap so big businesses should be pressured politically into paying their taxes and paying for the upkeep of our precious infrastructure. If they have a problem with that perhaps they can try selling their product in India or China. try shipping a few thousand plasma screens across either of those countries.

Sir, Madam or whatever you are you seem to be selective in recognizing the race of offenders in the crime blotter. In the past couple of weeks including today's crime blotter the offenders have had Spanish surnames in 40% of the crimes committed while 59% have had English surnames. This does not necessarily mean that these people are white but considering that only 5% of our county is African American well you do the math. I even remember a day this month where 4 out of 5 names were of English origin and most of the crimes were sex offenses. What a surprise! Also if you notice the upstanding citizen in today's crime section is another upstanding English named citizen and in his picture he doesn't seem to be Mexican. Make sure Mr or Mrs. Realist you take note of all offenders. Oh yeah Feliz Dia De Los Muertos

The reactionary right has nearly bankrupt our once glorious nation. After 12 years of corruption of our American ideals by these closet Nazi's it is high time we socialize the institutions that serve our people including health care, education and housing. What we could use in this era of tax slashing for the corporate elites is some Keynesian economics. After the debacle our conservative compatriots have created over the past 8 years first with their inducing of 9/11 and then with their overpriced privatized war in Iraq we need some serious stimulation of the workforce. Let's start by dismantling all of these Reaganomics throw back policies the Republican regime and their cohorts in congress passed during this dark period and return to the FDR style policies that led us out of the first Republican deregulated depression back in the 1930's. Oh yeah one more thing, please stop speaking for the tax payers if you only represent the 1% of the wealthiest Americans who do not pay taxes. Build homes, schools, and hospitals not bombs, missiles, and overseas military bases.

The Republicans the host of fascist they support are not content to take our country to heel in the hand basket they have weaved with their tax slashing for the rich policies. Low income housing is for the working poor you know the people who actually work for these fascist elites who push paper and devise new ways to externalize their corporate costs onto the actual tax payers, working people. Please spend my tax dollars on working people such as myself. This includes spending money on the American people not subsidizing another campaign abroad to capture more wealth for the lazy wealthy elites. Spending tax dollars on housing for the American worker is an investment in the U.S. by the actual American public, the workers. Not the lofty, spoiled, cry babies who like to speak as if their the only citizens in the country. To the contrary the working poor are both the majority of the population and the majority of the tax payers, they don't enjoy the tax loopholes and over seas tax shelters these faux patriots on the right are. Hooray for affordable housing for the real Americans, the workers!

Socialized medicine is not a movement towards creating a socialist nation here in the U.S. Our country has been steadily moving towards the right since the Reagan administration. Also let me clarify that the Democratic party has also had a significant role in the "righting" of America. Industrial Robber Barons have come to dominate the political machine in the past twenty years and "Free Traders" have learned how to economically pressure their workers into voting against their own interest, in this case nationalizing health coverage for all. Ala Greenspan and the Chicago school of economists including Milton Friedman have been the most influential intellectual forces in the past thirty years and this has pushed our economy to the brink of ruin. Its time we revert to the Keynesian school of economics and bolster our labor force through education, training, and yes health coverage through the state. We must break the tyranny of these modern corporate slave masters or "Free Traders" and yes your a trader to your nation if you choose your profit margin over your government. I believe this choice is clearly spelled out in the preamble to the constitution of this great nation that ".. promoting the general welfare...secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.." Any movement by the corporate right away from this is unpatriotic and un-American.

I am not sure if you meant your comment for MH Dad or myself. I am happy that you did decide to contribute a comment in defense of the family of the young man we unfortunately lost. This situation is tragic I know because my nephew was killed in Gilroy last November due to Gang violence. I work with gang impacted youth everyday and know them as well as I know myself because I was one of them. But to possibly give you and the family some comfort I would like to say that there is hope for these troubled young members of our community. I have seen 4 young people graduate from local universities who were actively involved in gangs. As a matter of fact they were all from rival neighborhoods but when they finally reached a college campus they all became close friends. This is testament to the effectiveness of gang intervention programs and compassionate schools. If it wasn't for the existence of these programs in their community they all could have shared my nephews fate.

I would like to commend Mr. Knapp for having enough committment to his beliefs to use his real name, this is very respectable. I have to diagree with you on the matter of "statism" or the implication that our country is anyawy moving towards Socialism. to the contrary their has been a relaxation of regulations imposed on business since the "Gipper" was in office. Not to put all of the blame on the Republican party for accomodating the corporate raiders who have laid waste to our economy. Free Trade as practiced and preached by our leading economist has led to the mortgage meltdown, the health care crisis and the unprecedented loss of jobs. the working class does not lay itself off or outsource itself. Instead driving wages down in a race to the bottom in order to compete with Third World nations like honduras or Bangladesh we should pay heed to those nations that are becoming more competitive and poised to lead this new century. Privitization has been the doom of many bourgeoning economies across the globe. Let's give small businesses breathing room to develop the next cutting edge technology by nationalizing health care and investing in education of our workforce. Remember the next time you speak of the american worker that without them their isn't any industry. Widgets dont build themselves and sales executives and CEO's don't design the next cutting edge technologies.

Nationalized health care is an impairitive if we are going to be able to compete with other labor markets competing for skilled laborers.The overwhelming majority of the tax revenue in this country is generated by the working class not these corporate monoliths with their compalcent bureaucracies. We are losing our global leadership because we allow ourselves to be fooled by the elite who pretend to be concerned about our interests like health care. Humana, Kaiser, Blue Cross and Blue Shield and other profit making insurers have bought our society to the brink. Single payer health care might give our labor force a chance in competing around the globe. I have worked with at risk youth for over 10 years and have a lot of success working with this portion of our community. Because of my experience I know that most of the gangbangers you speak of are American citizens and cannot be deported. As someone who works with at risk youth I would assume you would know this. Please dont pretend that gangs are somehow linked to immigration becuase that's the stance most bigots usually assume. Gangs are an American problem and has been for generations. More that just identifying the issue we nee solutions. As far as zero tolerance we dont have a tolerant justice system three strikes, RICO act, and prop. 21 prove this. I have yet to meet a law enforcement officer who is tolerant of gang banging. We cannot arrest our way out of this and not all gang members are deportable just ask the Hells Angels or Nazi Lowriders.

Actually immigration coming from Mexico has slowed down considerably since the Republicans induced our country into a horrible recession. Even third world workers aren't interested in coming here for the opportunites we dont have anymore. Also American retirees and high school grads cant seem to get enough of Mexico because they keep buying up land and building gated communites there or travleing there for spring break. But I wouldn't expect a creature of ignorance like the cowardly realist to know that. P.S. Or much else for that matter.

Thank you for your intelligent contributions towards finding a solution to this issue. It is refreshing to see that we also have compassionate and knowledgable people in our community. There are excellent agencies whose mission it is to deal with gang violence and at risk youth in general. Community Solutions is one and we should start expanding funding for programs like theirs. I dont want to criticize the MHPD but increased suppression as a strategy doesn't work so I would suggest they begin more community oriented policing. I rememeber two Latina mothers that night both suggeting this. I was glad to see them participating in the discussion since the critics seem to be focused on discredting Latino parents.

I think the handball wall has nothing to do with gang violence since non gang bangers enjoy hanball. As a matter of fact I challenge you to prove that it has something to do with gang violence. I use that wall and most of the men who play are non gang bangers. It seems that a sport enjoyed by Latinos happens to irritate certain people. Also you cannot police your way out of this problem. Just to our neighbors to the north San Jose and Oakland. For a city the size of San Jose it is relatively safe and that is because of its efforts to establish and support gang prevention and intervention programs through olcal non profits. If you look at Oakland or even the town of Richmond they have few if any social programs for youth. The SJPD works closely with the local nonprofits and social programs and it has proven to be very effective. Not to mention San Jose has some of the best handball walls in the Bay Area and even goes as far as sponsoring handball tournaments for the communities they are in. Law enforcement has gradually become more heavy handed over the years when it comes to gang violence all over our state and it as of yet has'nt put an end to it. I was alson at that meeting and most of the mothers and other Latino community members were calling for increased social programs and community oriented policing not a "gang" unit. Since it is our youth we are discussing our requests should be priority.
