At 10¢ per poster, you can't beat the prices you're paying – though I'd love to know where you got posters that cheap!

How are you packing and shipping? Tubes or flat? What shipping service are you using, and what rates?

Re: Ari's Take - The Biz Behind Full-Time Independent Music by musician Ari Herstand

Hi Daryl, appreciate your response here (sorry for my tardiness!). Your method is essentially the same thing we do at Bandposters, just with a whole lot more work for you. Sure, there are ways to save a buck, but don't forget to factor in the most valuable thing you're trading: time.

If you don't mind my asking, what are you paying for 1000 posters? And what quality are you printing at (i.e. paper weight? full bleed? full color?)?

Give Bandposters a try on us: use the code ARISTAKE for one free order (up to $15). Would love to hear what you think!

Re: Street Team Marketing Ideas For Bands

Agreed, that's very high for many bands. I also won't dispute any of your points. But I fail to understand how Amazon would be affected if these aspects of bookstores were to disappear.

The main point of the Salon article seems to be arguing that Amazon's destruction of bookstores leads to their own demise. I argue that they just don't care.

Re: Going Digital or: How I learned to stop worrying and downsize my book collection

I would kill for this. Amazon already has Auto-rip, which allows you do download MP3s when you buy physical music, and Vudu/Walmart have a program to license streaming movies, whether or not you bought the movie from Walmart. I have to imagine Amazon is already fighting for this kind of licensing.

The obvious problem, of course, is that Amazon doesn't want your used books. They have a trade-in program, but I think they just give the books away - they give you an Amazon gift card, which means they're hoping you spend more.

Re: 5 Perfectly Good Reasons Why Apple’s iRadio Is A Non-starter (And One Counterargument)

I agree with most of your points, with one exception: Apple has a very good reason to create a subscription music service, and that is demand. While you're right, it will probably undermine their ability to sell overpriced downloads, they don't really have much choice in the matter. Music fans are moving to streaming in droves, whether its subscription or ad-supported, and I personally don't see that trend changing any time soon.

Re: This is my mom, and she still has cancer. The Artists: A Compromise To Save Face & Money

This isnt a different model, it's just a different advertiser. Offering ads to artists "for a reasonable price and/or a reduced royalty rate" ultimately puts Pandora out of business. Remember that the price of their advertising revenue is driven entirely by supply and demand coupled with the ability of the advertiser to pay.

Lexus and Target spend millions of dollars on advertising. Artists do not.

Even if you give artists the ability to insert their ads in addition to the ads already being served, you're using up valuable inventory that Pandora could otherwise be selling to the big guys. Sure, it benefits artists, and probably makes them happier when their royalties look better and ticket sales jump, but it doesn't help Pandora in the slightest. Doesn't seem like much of a compromise to me.

Re: The Consideration to Migrate from iPhone to Android has hit a Tipping Point for Me

My first (and only) Android device is the Samsung Epic 4G (Sprint), and it is, without a doubt, the worst phone I've owned in some time. I was very happy with it when I bought it (Eclair!!), then Samsung's Froyo update made the phone worse, then Gingerbread - which came a good 6 months to a year after Gingerbread was released to Nexus phones - made the phone nearly unusable. I've since rooted it, running Ice Cream Sandwich now, and the phone is better than with official Samsung ROMs, but I am very much looking forward to getting rid of it.

After spending a good year or two with iOS via my iPad, I'm almost certainly switching to an iPhone at the next release. There are a few killer features in Android I love - fully featured Google Maps, the new Cards feature in Jelly Bean, full integration with the Google suite of products - but there are just so many thing I like better in iOS that it doesn't make sense to stay.

I mean, Gmail sucks on Android. I can't get past that.

I'm much more impressed with the current lineup of Android phones, and I'm sure the next Nexus phone will be a major improvement (certainly over my current phone), but I'm just too fed up with the Android experience I've had.

Re: Jeff Litman Music | Classic country w/ classic shtick in Nashville....

Awww yeah, Robert's Western World FTW.

Re: Guest Post: Jay Frank on NPR's Emily White Vs. I think value is ultimately derived from an opinion of how useful something is, or as you mention the emotional attachment of something. Being physical gives perceived value, which can be the same as real value, but not necessarily.

At the end of the day, markets determine value on their own, and an item's price is determined by a combination of how much the seller would like to receive and how much the seller is willing to pay. If these things don't line up...

Re: 3 Good Reasons I Can’t Take David Lowery’s Open Letter to Emily White Seriously (and why you shouldn’t either)

Good find. I rarely watch them, except in the cases where I'm a huge fan (I admit I'm still devouring the extras on the LotR Blu-ray).

With that said, I think this article accidentally creates a diversion from the real issue - that content creators are no longer making bonus content - and replacing it with a non-issue - that the shift from disc-based media is to blame. Let's break it down.

The shift to streaming media really is not a technological hurdle that prevents bonus content from being consumed or produced. Bonus content has existed long before the intartubes, and continues to exist with them. In fact, I'd argue that the digital content delivery opens up a whole new realm of possibilities in the ways that bonus content can be displayed, interacted with, and shared. The very title of this article suggests that stories and storytelling are a lost art, but I'd quickly argue that storytelling is entering a rapid phase of expansion and creation thanks to a whole lot of awesome new storytelling media.

As for whether content creators are no longer making bonus content, I'd also argue this isn't true. The Aziz Ansari comedy special released earlier this week via his website includes a zip of bonus material, including hi-res photos from several of his shows, a list of Aziz's favorite restaurants (which is particularly awesome when you read it in his voice), and a Build-Your-Own-DVD-Cover including fully editable Adobe Illustrator files and instructions written by Aziz. It's one of the best sets of bonus content I've ever seen, and it's only about 70mb.

Bonus content isn't dead, nor is storytelling. It's just taking on new forms.

Re: Supporting Local Businesses: Hosse & Hosse Safe and Lock Company

Thanks, Paul, for that extra bit of history! Now ostensibly the wholesaler (i.e. publisher, rights-holder, etc.) would have the ability to set their own price to Amazon. But how then can Amazon say that the retail price - which they have complete control of - be set by the wholesaler?

As far as I know, Amazon can set the price however they like (see the Lady Gaga 99-cent album promotion, for instance). Of course, I don't think they're in the regular business of pricing items lower than wholesale price except as used for a loss-leader. But I just don't understand how the wholesaler can dictate to the retailer what their price should be.

Maybe I'm missing something here?

Re: Top 5 Online Music Trends in 2011

Great article - and thank you for balancing all the different data points in this crazy online music world. Good to see all the major streaming players getting their 100 words in, for instance. And the comments about music creation going mobile might be the most interesting - I think this is really one of the space to watch in 2012.

I might also add to this list the rise of YouTube Music. I know it isn't necessarily new, but YouTube Music's newest revamp has brought a lot of important features that help it stay ahead of the pack. Without question, YouTube is still the largest streaming music service in the world, and it was free before Spotify even hit the US radar.
