Pinkett-Smith wrote the female lead for herself, then discovered that she was incapable of directing a film and acting at the same time. So she re-cast the lead role and took a much smaller supporting role. For her two scenes, she had Will Smith direct the film, which I believe secretly makes the Human Contract Will Smith's directorial debut as well (he's credited as Executive Producer, but, sadly, did not provide an upbeat pop-rap theme song for it.

2. In the behind-the-scenes featurette Smith talks about how she had never written or directed a film before but knew she could do it because she was "smart and passionate" and people who are smart and passionate can accomplish anything they want. I would like to believe that to be true but it's probably more accurate to say that people who are rich, famous, beautiful, powerful and married to Will Smith can do anything they want.

3. If Smith were to record the HUMAN CONTRACT theme song, how would it go? That is your action item for this particular piece.

Re: Will Pacific Rim fans enjoy Jada Pinkett Smith’s 2008 directorial debut? I'm totally with you that I would much rather watch a bad movie from the 1980s or the 1970s or the 1990s, then a bad movie from today. That's partly attributable to nostalgia and the place movies like this played in my childhood and partially because they're interesting time capsules and sociological documents even if they're not always particularly interesting films.

Re: The forgotten blockbuster The Golden Child marks the beginning of Eddie Murphy’s “not trying” phase

Yeah, I've seen LEGAL EAGLES and found it surprisingly boring. I love Ritchie and think he's one of the most consistent and underrated American filmmakers of the 1970s (and that's really saying something) but his sly satirical touch is entirely absent. In the producer's memoir (which of course I have read), he describes Ritchie as a guy who made sports movies, not comedies, which really enraged me. The guy made some brilliant comedies. THE GOLDEN CHILD just wasn't one of them.

Re: The forgotten blockbuster The Golden Child marks the beginning of Eddie Murphy’s “not trying” phase

It didn't take long for Murphy to stop trying, did it? Should have been amazing. Instead it was hateful, misogynistic and awful.
