His Shepherd character is portrayed as a Christian and in a mostly good light (though he is more "spiritual" than Christian).

I think one of the reasons Joss Whedon is such a good writer is that his characters stay true to their background. When Captain America says that there is only one God, Joss Whedon isn't saying that. Captain America is, which is what he really might say given his background.

Re: *When God gives your buddy four more talents than you.

You're right, I haven't heard this preached on very often. Especially regarding work becoming an idol. But there's something in it that bothers me a little, and I think it is historical perspective.

As a concept, isn't the 40-hour work week relatively new? For people struggling to get by with the basics (which includes most people in the past, as well as many people even in the developed world today), implying that they are working too much by citing a number is ignoring reality, I think.

No question, we must pay careful attention to motives and temptations in all things, including our work. But also remember that simply having the option of deciding how to allocate significant portions of our time is relatively rare.

Re: Satan's Great Desire

This was my first thought, too. I don't see anything that lets me assume Paul was specifically talking about a single local church as opposed to all believers. What are we missing?

Re: Not Putting Sin to Death

I'm not sure this is necessarily in conflict with what Owen wrote. (I haven't read the book, and I'm looking forward to the next post.) Paul talked about struggling for the Colossian church with His energy. It's one of those things where we have a responsibility but can't fulfill it on our own.

Re: Mutual Submission

This is aimed at no one here in particular. It's just the result of some thoughts this post prompted.

The place where complimentarianism (wow, that's a hard word to spell....) gets in trouble is when it is separated from its implications aside from a hierarchy. In other words, if we take the view that Paul is teaching that a husband and wife are a picture of Christ and the church, a whole lot of things follow, most of which have nothing to do with authority.
If, as a husband, I am supposed to be the picture of Christ in my marriage, I must look at what Christ did. He washed his disciples' feet. He laid down his very life for his church. He submitted to his Father and said "not my will, but yours." Does any of this sound like "I have authority, so I make the rules"?

I personally think we would do well to speak of responsibilities rather than roles.

Do I have authority? I think I do. My wife says I do. But if I use that authority to overrule her wishes, preferences, or desires for a reason other than for her good, or the good of our daughter, I'm not being a biblical complimentarian. If I don't serve them and lay my life down for them, I'm not being a biblical complimentarian.

I've been blessed to know many Christian men (both older and my peers) who get this. It's a beautiful thing to see, and they are great examples for me to follow.

Re: What Nature Teaches About Sexuality

At first I thought you were being sarcastic. But I've actually been to this spot, and after reading the article it does kind of make sense. Actually, ten years ago you could pay some guy a few bucks to row you across the river and visit the town. And the park rangers knew about it, and actually encouraged it as part of their "Jr. Ranger" program. No papers, no passport, no questions asked. I don't think they do that anymore, though....

I think this would be more about letting Americans legally visit the town to "experience Mexico" rather than being an attempt to block drug dealers or the like.

Re: iOS Apps for Christians

I use Evernote for syncing most of my notes between devices, including prayers.

Re: That Moment of Terror

Hey, that's my home territory.
