As a matter of fact, CompSci people most often lack any clues about the social, economic, cultural, historical and political contexts of the data they gather.

So, they end up appealing to that highly misterious entity called "ethics". They try to appeal to what they think is their conscience but ultimately they even have to "outsource" that to "humanities" guys and what they call "soft sciences". They aren't even aware that their subjectivity as individuals is highly constrained and molded by hidden structures of indirect domination and oppression.

So, they don't even have to ask themselves if they really need "the communications of thousands of teenagers suffering from eating disorders posted on an anorexia advice website" or to "post anonymous, suicidal messages on hundreds of college forums to see which colleges offer the most support".

Really, what is the use of it? Does this foster cooperation with and trust from other individuals? These are not ethical questions in the sense that it pertains to the subjective conscience of the individual. Specially if you understand that individuals are always part of larger communities. These are scientific questions that can and need to be answered by employing the scientific method - for instance, by way of experiments.

To label all this stuff as "ethics" seems just another type of "Get Out Of Jail Free Card" where you can outsource all the hard issues concerning societies and communities as an aggregate set of individual choices. In sort, this is just a manifestation of bourgueois ideology where the critical use of reason is only valued up to the point where it serves the status quo.

Em vez de criarmos cidades em que as pessoas - independentemente da sua condição social - possam conviver e estar em sociedade, com transportes públicos a funcionar 24 sobre 24 horas (por exemplo, através da automatização do metro), temos políticos que só querem encafuar o máximo tempo possível as pessoas em caixotes para que morram de solidão.

O que está em causa é que o direito das pessoas usufruírem da cidade nunca deve ser negado apenas porque o zoneamento dessa cidade entre comércio/espaços de diversão, indústria e residências é praticamente inexistente. Aliás, certamente que se não tivessem que ir trabalhar para ir dar de dinheiro a ganhar a quaisquer senhores burgueses que não se iriam importar em nada que uma esplanada tivesse aberta até às duas da manhã.

Para além do mais, ninguém obriga os residentes a morarem no Cais do Sodré ou no Bairro Alto ou ao pé de qualquer outra esplanada em qualquer ponto da cidade. O mau planeamento urbano não deve servir para impedir as pessoas que o queiram de sair de casa e conviver juntas em sociedade. O ostracismo incentivado pelo clima económico actual e o umbiguismo de muitas novas tecnologias já é mais do que suficiente. Pessoalmente, serei sempre contra toda e qualquer medida que incentive ou leve as pessoas a fecharem-se em casa em nome de uma suposta "ordem e paz social".

Aliás, porque razão se há-de legitimar o encerramento de espaços de convívio social com a necessidade de "ordem e paz social"? Para mim a razão parece-me ser óbvia: Para poder acordar cedo para de manhã ir dar de dinheiro a ganhar a um capitalista. Isso é expulsar as pessoas da cidade, dizer que elas só podem estar na cidade se for para trabalhar ou se tiverem dinheiro para comprar casa lá.

O que este fascista-eugenista não diz (mas devia dizer) é que para uma sociedade "mais vale todos trabalharem menos horas pelo mesmo salário do que ter uma taxa elevada de desemprego". Na verdade faz todo o sentido todos trabalharmos menos horas pelo mesmo salário. É só nesta acepção que podemos falar verdadeiramente numa luta de classes. Implicitamente, sempre que os fascistas-eugenistas nos chantageiam com falsas alternativas, eles estão a invocar os seus interesses de classe. Não sejamos ingénuos a ponto de acreditar que eles defendem isto de forma desinteressada, tendo em conta o bem-estar social mais vasto...

the COMMONS recently recovered by James Boyle. Any other meanings of the
word Communism are just opportunistic deturpations of the motto "from
each according to his/her abilities; to each according to his/her
needs." By mistaking the position of the MPAA and the like for a
communist position, you are ignoring the fact that their exclusive goal
is the accumulation of PROFIT.
