There have been many iterations of Mighty Avengers, including the one where Hank Pym works out his Oedipal/Electral? issues, but the earliest one (that I recall) was the government sanctioned Avengers team led by Tony Stark, post Civil War and running up to Secret Invasion.

I get that, and it's certainly valid, but I think my point was more about how effective teams are built of individuals playing specific roles coming from different backgrounds and ideologies, but working towards one goal. For a less extreme example, why do the avengers feel the need to keep Hawkeye around on the same team as Thor?

I think there's a flaw in thinking there's only one way for justice to occur, whether that be working inside or outside the system. It's gonna take both, and not everyone can do both, and in fact most people can only do one or the other.

Nah I'm talking about Mighty Avengers not Dark Avengers. This is the book that was running concurrently with New Avengers during Secret Invasion, I'm pretty sure it was Black Widow and Tony talking about who to pick for their newly sanctioned Avengers team.

I gotta disagree here--- first of all, protesting and writing your lawmakers aren't mutually exclusive ideas. Second, people are more likely to become politically active if they know other people are in it with them. Protests, especially on the scale of the ones happening right now, are a good way to do that. Lastly, as private citizens, we only have a handful of tools to get our feelings across: donations, directly contacting representatives, and protesting being the main ones.

Protesting is a little more abstract, but I wouldn't say it isn't constructive.

Need to second the hair; I didn't even know this was something I wanted until I saw it but my reaction was, "holy shit, they have hair like mine," which is to say, jet black and coarse (and then yeah on the animation level, the fact that you can tell it's a certain, subtly specific *type* of hair is pretty amazing)

For me it's especially jarring in comparison to that other Netflix throwback series, Stranger Things which still has daily articles (full disclosure, enjoyed ST, but feels ultimately forgettable to me). I haven't seen many of the other TV/culture blogs post much beyond the usual lead-up hype (trailers, etc) and their standard episode reviews/recaps. And TGD seems like an essential show, and so of the moment (nostalgia factor, sincerity factor, hip-hop that is so far away from the current state of hip-hop that it might as well be alt-hip-hop, a stunning example of diversity in media (both in the faces on screen and in the culture it's portraying) that we've all been asking for) it is especially jarring that it's been so overlooked

The short story is one of my favorite works ever, and it's something that seems to be in the back of my mind a lot. I definitely recommend reading it first, if anything knowing what happens is making me anticipate this movie a lot more.

I've been waiting for this news to post to BMD just so I could share how great The Wood is, and I'm glad I'm not the only one. I just re-watched it a few weeks back and it definitely holds up. I haven't seen Everybody Wants Some yet, but I had Devin's comments about it being a positive examination of traditional masculinity in mind, and I really feel like The Wood does that as well (while also identifying the pitfalls and bullshit of traditional masculinity). And yeah, great character work and casting and structure, too. And that soundtrack... I think I Shazammed almost every needle drop in the movie.

Love The Wood.
