The same way the U.S. is freeing Iraq from Saddam right now.

Re: Live Blogging The Inauguration

What an amazing morning! By collective punishment, the drafters of the Geneva Conventions had in mind the reprisal killings of World Wars I and II. In the First World War, Germans executed Belgian villagers in mass retribution for resistance activity. In World War II, Nazis carried out a form of collective punishment to suppress resistance. Entire villages or towns or districts were held responsible for any resistance activity that took place there. The conventions, to counter this, reiterated the principle of individual responsibility. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Commentary to the conventions states that parties to a conflict often would resort to "intimidatory measures to terrorize the population" in hopes of preventing hostile acts, but such practices "strike at guilty and innocent alike. They are opposed to all principles based on humanity and justice."

Re: Theatre of the American Absurd

This may be a culture that celebrates mediocrity a, but the rest of the world actually understands the need for knowledge and fears ignorance.

Re: Theatre of the American Absurd

Maybe he will unclog the toilet that is American media

Re: Live Blogging From SF Gaza Protest

"the Palestinian community in the US, who once they got the hell out of Palestine, want to work hard, keep their heads down, and make that better life for their children that caused them to get the hell out in the first place"

I completely agree, Hala. That was the point of them getting out in the first place. I feel so removed sometimes because of that slow guilt you mention of having the privilege that my parents got the hell out of there before I was even born. As a child I remember my father talking about how we would all end up back there and how we have a land and olive trees waiting for us. Even in my dreamy childhood I shrugged him off and thought he had the ideas of a hopeless romantic. I thought I would die not ever smelling those olive trees.

While the generation that left is burdened with all the baggage they carried in their refuge. My generation is just a little removed, but I believe that we are the ones with the power to make a change and communicate to the modern world in its language. Free of the guilt of leaving, that decision was made on our behalf. Now is the time for us to make our own decision.

Re: Live Blogging From SF Gaza Protest

Do you know something I don't know?
