Again ... nobody in power with Trump thinks thoughts that rise to this level of strategizing. We have taken Obama's long-game chess brain for granted for so long that we thought every President plays that way. And all (or at least most) have, until now.

In my home state there is a 30 percent bottom line of those who would vote Republican for absolutely anything or anybody. We established that a feww years ago when a sacrificial lamb was put up as a GOP governor candidate in a secret corrupt bargain between Mitch and the incumbent governor seeking re-election. All the calculations start with that base. Might be different in different states, but we're near the granite-bedrock floor now. Single-point drops take on new significance after 30.

They lose purchasing power to higher fuel prices, they lose healthcare to whatever mucking around McConnell can engineer, they realize coal jobs and manufacturing work in general are not coming back, and they're hammered every way they look despite putting their faith in the Liar-In-Chief. Bush's 22 will look golden to him after that.

A tenet I and other reporters absorbed with our baby food: Journalists are affable. They put you at ease. They make you want to chat. And when you do, they go away and do their job, which often involves stabbing you in absentia. Schmooze with them, sure, but keep your tongue in check.

I'm a typographer and no Palin-ista, but what a shallow attack. Book jacket designs go through typographical fads - right now we're seeing a lot of Didiot to convey unadorned sincerity or boiled-down truth. It's a flavor of the year, that's all. I'm sure she didn't choose it, or dictate the details of her portrait. Every author has a windswept nature scene with him or her looking placid, wise and serene at the center of it. Oh well, it's a deadline, we have to write something huh. I like your work usually. Thanks for making the effort.
