Financial literacy is a two way street. Most colleges have robust FL programs on their campuses but students aren't required to do them! Most of the students who earn zero or under 15 or 30 hours even aren't likely to seek out the information. Default management at community colleges is difficult to say the least. Colleges who require a first year orientation have an opportunity to get the info out there, but not all do that. They can also discuss with students during graduation practice or other events as students prepare to exit the college - but those with few hours are missed. I agree with your sentiment about the ease to take out and difficulty to pay back.

Pell already covers 100% of tuition, fees, and books at most community colleges. Even at the Iowa colleges they mention above they'd be covered. It is ALREADY free. Students often take loans to cover the other costs. Most reason I hear are for technology (computers, software, etc.) and for living expenses needed due to not working full-time. I am not of the opinion that we should fund Pell (or any other "FREE" program) up to the full COA.

I am a USI alum as well ('05, '13) and am looking forward to the game. USI has taken D1 teams down to the wire in the past in exhibitions (Tennessee, Evansville) and always play like their butts are on fire. They have a really good coach in Rodney Watson.
Big Ten connection: Deandre McCamey, the brother of Demitri "I thought he graduated" McCamey, is on the team.

This one stings a bit. I know IU cooled on him a little, but made the top 4. Even though from my neck of the woods and close to Louisville he's an Indiana kid that we didn't get. Not as big of a let down as the whole Trey Lyles fiasco, but it's a loss for IU for sure. He'll do great at Louisville and I wish him well, but the candy stripes would have looked fab-o-lous on him. We better lock in Exum or one of the other 2014 studs though.

I have to agree with the 2/3 seed prediction. Playing in the B1G is awesome, but it's so good that the teams all beat up on one another. Realistically the conference could have 7 teams in the dance - one at each seed, 1-7! That would be pretty cool!

l like Hollowell - but that kid needs to slow down a tick. I feel like sometimes he's forcing the action, trying to do too much but that he's running at about 80% of game speed. Silly fouls. Silly turnovers.

Watford - man what an awful night. He was 1 of 8 from the field, with the only FG being the dunk. With so many weapons on the floor and so much going right, why was he hefting up ill advised 3 pointers? Sometimes I feel like Watford thinks he's still out there with Devin Dumes and Tom Pritchard and has to force the action, when he just needs to slow the F$&% down and get the ball to someone with a better look.

I am looking forward to seeing this team with Hanner and Jurkin... the additional size and length in the post is going to be huge.

Saw someone on Twitter posted earlier that our student section alone would fill 85% of Cameron Indoor at Duke. Are they used to crazy and hostile crowds? Sure, they played at UK last year and they play NCST and Maryland, as well as Duke. I think our guys are charged by the crowd more so than the opponents rattled... they'll need to play a tugh an gritty game, win the loose balls, and stay out of foul trouble. This will be no blowout - I am thinking 5-10 point game decided by free throws late.

27-4. This team will be GREAT but they are human, and like some have said, the B10 is no joke. Wins on the road will still be hard to come by, especially when everyone will be gunning for #1. I am worried about the early games in Brooklyn.... anyone else?? IU is definetly one of the top 5 teams in the country - and it has been a long time coming, baby!

I don't see how Louisville could be ahead of IU... only 2 NCAA championships.... I would guess the sanctions and the years of futility (under Davis and He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named, and the first 3 years Crean spent rebuilding) killed us on this. The first decade of the this starting in 1962 hurt too... Cannot wait to see what the next 50 years holds for IU! Though I likely won't get to see all of it!!

Funny you should mention the book Season on the Brink - I was talking the other day to my wife about how it would be neat for Feinstein to go back and do another season... just for a perspective on the differences between the Knight program and the Crean program. Does anyone know if Hutch has released his book yet? I'll go check..

I think IU can go 10-8, 11-7 easy in the B1G, depending on the health of Jones and Sheehey. They go 10-8 (which like you said now seems on the low end for wins) and that puts them at 22-8 at Big Ten tourney time with wins over UK, ND, and NC State.. seem like a tourney lock if they can even go .500 in league play..

Will be interesting to see today what the absence of Jones means, though I wish we had Sheehey healthy for a truer representation.

I think the depth and addition of Zeller have been key. We had so many games over the past three years that we shoulda coulda woulda won with some depth and follow through. Adding the big man in the middle to draw the double team has been huge. Emphasis on rebounding and defense are possible now that the other areas are taken care of. IU is more of a complete package now than they've been in the past. Not to hate on VJ3 too much, but his departure next year and next years class coming in will really mean turning the corner from upstart overachievers (this year) and a truly elite basketball team next year. i am really glad they are having this success this season though, because the guys coming in will need to have that leadership and poise to feed off of when they come in. IU next season could be a top 10 ranked team in preseason... unfathomable just a month ago.

These tune up games are good, but I am really looking forward to seeing how IU fares against Butler and NC State Sunday and next week. Those will be a better measuring stick of how this team will fare against the likes of UK and ND, who will be the toughest non-conference tests for sure. Enjoying the early season successes though... GO IU!

FYI there have been some issues with communcations in the Ford Center. I had cell phone coverage, but spotty, and not sure about the wi-fi, though I know the local Indy station that broadcast the game had general communications nightmares, per media reports.

Yes, I watched the IU/Ball State football game and I believe North Texas as well and had pretty luck on WOW cable in Evansville. Picture was a bit pixelated at times, but may have been PC issues more than connection. I didn't throw up on the HDTV, but would think it would be passable.

I've been to a fair number of UE games over the past 10 years or so (I have a hook-up for free tix - hey, it's college hoops!) and they've had low attendance (normally under 5k per game) unless there is a bigger name school there. When Purdue played here about 5 years ago at the old Roberts Stadium it was probably 35% Purdue/65% UE fans. Last Saturday vs Butler there was probably a 25%/75% split, but were talking BUTLER, not IU or Purdue. And, Southern Indiana is usually more traditional IU country that Purdue. I would expect the numbers to be around 40/60 or 50/50.

And dmbcubs21 is right about the UE fans, they are normally a more pedestrian crowd than rabid fans. They appreciate the games, but aren't vocal until it gets close. The UE student section is pretty tame as well, with maybe 500 students there for the Butler game.

I was at the UE/Butler game, and Butler should have won it.  Butler had a 9 point lead at half, pushed to 13, then Aces got some breaks (aka bad calls against Butler) and some serious help from Andrew Smith's foul trouble and atrocious shooting from the stripe, especially in the clutch.

Colt Ryan is the real deal though.   Has great range and can drive to the hoop. The catalyst for UE though, especially in the first half, was Jordan Jahr. He made some key jumpers and had some big rebounds to keep it close through most of the first half.

I'll be at the game on Wednesday.   From talking to folks it sounds like there will be a large contingent of IU fans in attendance, as on ewould expect. Anyone here planning on going to the game?   I'm taking my dad to the game, who I haven't been to a game with since IU/Kentucky in 1991... hoping for an IU win.

Oh, I know... I really don't care either. But, outside of the rivalry, they are still a B1G foe, and worth noting their SOS. I just wonder if it'll affect their readiness for conference play... Ken Pom has them as #3 in B1G... not seeing it this year. I always respect a team willing to take some punches early on like Michigan State, Butler, etc, this may hurt them in the long run.
