We've kind of gotten intrigued by the idea of RV travel. That's how I stumbled on your blog, and I've been lurking on your posts. Thank you very much for the account. I think you have likely seen more of the US than most of its residents. I'm a bit sad we didn't get a chance to meet.

I'm very curious how you enjoyed Chicago. My wife and I like visiting Chicago, but we usually like to drive up in a car, leave it parked, stay in a rented apartment near the center of the city and walk or use public transit to get around. It's clearly not the same as using an RV.

If you have a chance, try to see the Minuteman Missile Historic site. It is a former nuclear missile launch center and a missile silo near the badlands. It was decommissioned several years ago and is part of the National Park Service now. It's right off the interstate, not far from Wall Drug.

The really sick thing is we have some of these on disc and still have to watch it on broadcast if it's on. I wonder how much of this is what gets play on TV / cable. I'd probably stop and watch anything by David Lean or Kubrick.

Oh, wait. Nearly anything by Hitchcock. Some of the greatest, I'll not list but give clues: Ambrose Chapel, Prairie Stop (you've been there Bill!), and Ironsides. Pat points out that with a DVR, you don't have to miss a meal.

I once was convinced that the book was always better than the movie. I think "Jaws" changed that for me.

Also, I like Grisham's work. It's engaging, he's got great characters, and tells a story well. However, sometimes it seems like he isn't sure how to end the story. Too often, he has everyone run off to the Caribbean to live happily ever after. Consider "The Firm": the movie ending makes much more sense than the book.

It reminds me of the story where a politician, a comedy writer, and a lawyer walked into a bar...

I imagine the internet provides interesting challenges to topical humor. Something happens, and a lot of often very good jokes are all over the place. Of course, the show takes on those same topics, but I don't recall once hearing a joke that I'd already seen on the internet. It also seems that they're better. Perhaps they really are, or perhaps the jokes I'd already heard server as a kind of warm-up act.

I wonder if it'd be dangerous to read the on-line jokes (and risk accidentally copying a joke) or dangerous not to (and play a great joke that was already well-known).

The market share is an important factor. A month or two ago I heard that the number of PCs running the brand new Windows 7 had passed all varieties of Mac OS put together. It's not just the number of target computers, but perhaps more how many people have learned how develop on a platform. That cuts both ways. There are more bad guys writing PC software, but there are more good guys, too. The other thing that I have to wonder about is this: do we just hear about more virus problems on PCs than Macs because so many more people have PCs than Macs?

In general you need to practice Safe Computing. This is probably a good idea whatever system you have.
- get regular software updates (often automatic)
- be careful of what programs you download and install on purpose. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a simple way to say what places are reputable and which aren't. I use a combination of sites that I already trust plus recommendations from people I trust.
- try not to download and install programs by accident or by trickery:
= have virus & spyware detector programs. Make sure they're up to date!
= don't open email attachments or click on email links you didn't request
= bad guys have popups urging you to clean your registry or clean a virus. Is it from your virus detector or from a bad guy? If you're not sure, close everything, reboot, and run a virus scan.
= many people think browsers like Chrome or Firefox plus pop up and script blocker plugins make things safer by preventing those bad guy popups and other crap that self installs.

On your recommendation, we got it through the Netflix instant thingy. We tried to watch it and were enjoying, but half way through there was all this stuff on screen about MIT. (Just kidding! MIT joke.) Very interesting. Thanks! The cultural / historical context was particularly interesting.

While looking up trivia about people it seems it was a real shame they couldn't get Calvin Hill to give an interview. G. W. Bush was a frat brother of his. Meanwhile, his wife went to Wellesly and had one Hillary Rodham as a suite mate. Are there like 12 people running this place or something?
