My only comment -- over the past year I've tested both shorter and longer (more optimized) URLs and it's unfortunate, but the optimized URLs kept out-performing the short ones. The same was true with optimized folder structure. It was frustrating. In one case we had a waterfall project for an enterprise client lead into a big redesign and I decided to heed the advice of my team with a shorter URL structure, because "this looks cleaner!" We chopped one folder and a page down in length as a test. Post launch all of the pages where we didn't compromise, saw traffic and rankings hold or grow. Where we shortened the URLs, we saw organic performance drop. It was disheartening. I didn't want an "I told you so" moment at the expense of results and team involvement in strategy and overall confidence. This is one of those areas where I think the amount of signals matters. If there aren't an overwhelming amount of strong signals towards something or it's a highly competitive industry then this type of change can still be painful. Just a word of caution after my mistake!

Re: High Fidelity Consulting

Hmm. This got self-reflective quickly. It's probably more situational, but feels like it happens often because of our current size, structure, and roles. The concern mostly manifests itself in a skip level meeting where I'm nervous about recommending something that goes against what an employee's manager may or may not have done explicitly (or with client contacts who may have received direction from someone else). I'm also generally nervous about offending creatives with suggestions though I've found most to be very open to feedback and constructive criticism. I like the idea of curbing some perhaps unnecessary worry with really simple mockups that are open to critique like you mentioned.

Re: High Fidelity Consulting

Timely follow-up to a piece I stumbled on this morning that I was chewing on: https://www.nirandfar.com/2...

Specifically: "At the highest level, you need to apply design thinking and problem solving. You need to be able to empathize, ideate, prototype and, iterate. This is foundational. If entrepreneurs can’t do that well, then it doesn’t matter if they have the right first idea. Conversely, if they do this well, then I’m confident that they will eventually arrive at the right solution."

I realized that I have a tendency to avoid prototyping, because I don't want to step on toes or micromanage a person or worse the perfectionist in me passes off a prototype and the vision isn't fully realized by the designer or developer. But it's unavoidable--people need something for all the reasons you stated above and fundamentally, that equals a deliverable, which is the currency we often operate in. I want to travel down this road more. Thanks for more to ponder. :)

Re: A Welcome to SparkToro’s Cofounder: Casey Henry

Congratulations to you both! We've had so many moments when we spend more time trying to validate something an in-house tool suggested against a more reliable source of data and our experienced perspective with it. There's an entire economy built up at this point in tool setup, management, and validation with an in-house person fully dedicated to simply understanding it. I know this may be necessary in some environments, but the inefficiency and risks boggle my mind.

Re: We're Launching an Analytics Division Led by Rachael Gerson

Awesome. We could change the format of how we receive data, but we weren't ready to commit that much programming time to the free little project. After Steve Rubel tweeted about it the demand suddenly increased ten fold, so we'll be trying to fix this right away. Thanks for the mention!
