Contact is written to a pretty basic folk melody that anyone could have borrowed a variation of for a song, and Phish would probably be the first to admit that. Songs are more than just their melody. Phish has written some amazing original melodies, but Contact is kind of a joke song (one that I love), and the melody is simplistic and familiar. Now, if Megan Trainor releases a song that has an uncanny resemblance to "Billy Breathes" (and somehow manages to get attention & have commercial success with it, which is itself a rare feat these days) then let's talk. All this article has done is get a ton of phish fans to click on a very stupid pop song...

Re: 5 Great (and Free) Alternatives to QuickTime

I have a newer model macbook pro, and recently a lot of my audio files that I would usually open in QT for a quick preview just won't play, or rather, they will look like they are playing but there is no sound. It has been very frustrating trying to figure out what the problem is, which sent me looking for an alternative, which is how I found this thread.

Re: It took me three years of wonderful labor to... | John C. Different Kinds of Content.

There's also the factor that some people will be interested in your blog more than the music... Bob Lefsetz touched on this recently. As a musician, I find your blog very valuable as a part of the industry conversation about where the business is headed.

This lead me to purchase your CD, which I love, but to be honest, haven't really spent a ton of time with yet due to scattered listening habits and just an overwhelming flood of stuff to listen to, write, teach etc... But at the same time, I've mentioned your blog in conversations about the music business.

So I'm a fan that's a musician... I used to discount musician fans. The flood of MySpace friend requests from bands can make it seem that MySpace has become (as one recent writer put it) a place where bands advertise to each other. So for awhile, I stopped accepting friend requests from bands, and saw a few people get mad... like "who are you to not accept requests from bands... etc." I've been on the other end of that equation as well. So now I accept all requests, and realize some of the bands are just randomly adding links, but some are genuine fans. Musicians are probably some of the biggest music consumers, and also like to tell people what they're listening to...

I always enjoy your posts, and I look forward to getting some more extended listening time with the disk. Very interesting times we live in.
