I would check the functions.php file and make sure there is no whitespace at the top or the bottom of the file. Oddities like this crop up when there is random whitespace.

I've never seen this error. What version of WP are you using? I'll try to replicate it later today.

The theme isn't really set up for child themes so I wouldn't recommend that.

I've been meaning to strip that out and enqueue it properly for some time now. I've just pushed and updated version of the theme that removes all the jQuery stuff in the footer and loads Google's CDN version.

99% of the time this happens when there's extra whitespace in the functions.php file. Check around for where you're opening and closing PHP () and make sure there isn't any extra space anywhere.

I actually don't have access to Safari 3 to test on. I've only tested on 5 thus far, but there should be any reason it doesn't work. Are you getting errors? Or are the floats wrong?

Since this is really just a boilerplate, all the responsive-ness is up to the developer. In the CSS file, there are some basic media queries to get you started, but the rest is up to you.

Sounds like you have some white space in your function.php file. Look around for a place where you're closing the PHP and re-opening it. Like this:

Yep, you can definitely use menu_icon, but it's a bit more limited since it only applies the default opacity WP uses out of the box. It's more future proof, but if you're more design focused, it's just too limited.
