I understand that important sponsors and organizers need to be thanked, but does a mid-concert speech disturb your flow of music ?

On a side note, I thought it was extremely large-hearted of some people who were to be felicitated to stay at their seats and indicate to the organizers to resume your concert soon.

Rajeev

Re: A knowledgeable rasika - 1

Ahh!!! Sanjay , I don't know if this post, like your music, is a flourishing combination of past experience and your overall imagination, but on the whole I get the point.
I am relatively young, or so I would like to think ;-), and I sometimes feel that ,as rasikas, keeping an open mind about any performace by an upcoming musician or otherwise is an extremely difficult task. We all have our benchmarks, we all, at the very least, conceptualize about what an ideal concert would be like. A deviation, whether small or large, from that is probably accepted, but do we accept easily accept experimentations bordering on transgressions? Or who decides what is or is not a transgression?
I love your brand of music and your way of experimenting with newer ragas, but then again I do not belong to the older generation. The tryst with the past, they say, paves the way for a better future. I would say the musician has complete authority over what to sing in his concert and we as rasikas have complete authority over whether to attend a particular concert or no. We cannot pass judgements on how a musician should go about his concert. As the famous saying goes, "Your freedom ends where my nose begins!!!"

Re: Mic and no mic - Some thoughts

Thanks Sanjay for a thought provoking post.
My two cents:
Acoustic properties of the hall do wonders for certain chamber concerts that I have heard. A lay listener does feel that he is listening to the whole spectrum of sounds being produced as opposed to mic concerts where certain high frequencies go missing, either due to sub standard electronic equipment( which is more often than not the case.. I mean how often do we see Shure or any other Hi-Fi audio setup being used in India, not US!!) or due to distorted frquency response of the speakers in the hall or sometimes even due to unnatural reverb .
I think a mic less concert where volumes of vocalist , violinist and mridangist are naturally balanced would be an aural delight. However I think a mic concert is a definite way of delivering to the listeners a consistent experience , because almost everything from base, treble , volume to stereo widening can be controlled for each channel. A more practical and intelligent way to go about concerts today would be accept a good hifi mic setup and let things be..
In short, as Sanjay said, If the music is good almost nothing matters. We all enjoy old recordings of stalwarts , irrepective of audio quality more because of the quality of the music..
