Suffice to say that my clients have trusted and benefited from my counsel for over three decades.

I disagree about the content of the article. It is very clearly about social media and how consumers are using it for their shopping needs and how retailers are utilizing it to tap into weary and skeptical consumers.

As for "realtime" data, clearly you are not much of a market research expert. If you were you would know that Powerfeedback and other firms use tools to in fact collect intelligence in "realtime".

Re: Where is your line?

Prior to the economic meltdown and subsequent near depression like conditions, "auto-renewal" was a good business model. Today, not so much. Here are two example reasons why based on our research.

1) People forget that they opted for auto-renewal. Once the fee hits their credit card/bank account, on average today, 34% of customers contact the vendor and ask to cancel and to be credited due to curtailed spending.

2) More and more credit cards are maxed out and/or cut-off.

It costs the vendor much more money to auto-renew (or to try to) a subscription, then credit an account versus sending out a friendly reminder first.

Re: Up In the Air, a decent movie, total marketing disaster

Reports like this will not help the airline travel business, whether for business or personal.

http://www.usatoday.com/tra...

http://www.usatoday.com/tra...

Re: BlackBerry Outage Affecting North America

Hey fellow Eastern PA/VZW'er :-) I am down as well :-(

Re: BlackBerry Outage Affecting North America

On Verizon in Pennsylvania and we're still down. That said, my wife has attended two different seminars in the last month at a local community college. She did call ahead of time, but, was told that the "vendor" putting on the event was responsible for the meal and they were unsure as to who she could talk to. In my wife's case, no big thing, she brought her own meal. Looking at the big picture though, it would make sense for these events to be more focused on the attendees, especially as most also are pushing product for sale.

Re: Market Research made me millions

Good point Ian. In the discovery (scope) phase of a client project we work hard to flush out the real intentions and objectives. Unfortunately, quite often, there is a moving target, especially if the research initiative is any type of long-term tracking study.

Free form could work as you described if you limit the number of questions. The ability for us (or another MR firm) to extract the needed data for the buckets you outlined would be much more achievable and productive for the client, and their customer.

Re: Free form interaction

For many years we have been including the ability for clients to interpret open-ended questions. Can we launch an entirely free-form system for customers to express themselves to clients? The short answer is yes, but, there are pitfalls.

In order for this to be truly effective, you have to limit the amount of characters/words that people have. Otherwise, harvesting and interpreting the data is not only cumbersome, it becomes less and less scientific, which then means it will be less valuable and helpful. Give people the chance, many will write a novel --- trust me! Once you limit people, you have now alienated a good chunk of your audience.

There are plenty of other ways (In-Depth Interviews, Online Chats, etc.) to accomplish the goals that you suggest in conjunction with a free-form system. Frankly, it all comes down to working with the right market research (MR) company.

The biggest problem with 99% of our competitors is that their first thought is methodology versus the real business need. Once you understand the business need and underlying issues, the rest is cake!

As for the system that PhoneTag uses, I agree, its great! That said, with all due respect, unless I am mistaken, it has a less less moving parts (gate problems, plane issues, crew issues, connection snafus, airport problems, food complaints, baggage screw-ups, etc.) than an airline.

Re: Is Unemployment really 10%?

I side with those (http://www.streetinsider.co... who believe that the real unemployment number is closer to 16+%.

When surveying people who are jobless, those not collecting unemployment (benefits lapsed, etc.) are not included, nor are people who are working part-time, under-employed, working in barter (yes, I know of people doing this) situation, and those who just gave up, and yes, I do know of people like that as well.

I do believe that you make excellent points, but, I am also thoroughly convinced that Washington is solely focused on healthcare, and as a result, dealing with the economy is on the very back-burner.

As for small businesses and start-ups, if we want to get this country moving again, we need H.R. 2568 passed immediately, and we need both sides of Pennsylvania Avenue to stop diverting small business contracts to multi-national conglomerates. Supposedly this will mirror AT&T's "Bold." I am amazed to read how many people are "jailbreaking" their iPhone to work on tMobile. It still amazes me as to how connected people are to their devices, but carrier loyalty is another story. Oh iPhone, please come to VZW!

Re: James Siminoff

I have given interviews on this topic, as well as written extensively about it over the last year. From a history perspective, as well as in theory, I agree. In reality, in today's political climate, there are "hidden" challenges.

Small businesses and start-up's have never been more challenged. The SBA is a disaster. Thanks to the SBA, Congress, and the President (Bush, now Obama) Federal contracts set aside for small business and start-up's have been steered towards Fortune 500 Companies. The credit market may have opened somewhat for large business, but not for small businesses and start-up's. The SBA's own Inspector General, as well as other agencies have uncovered vast abuse, and violations. Of course, the media ignores this. The American Small Business League (ASBL) has covered this extensively.

If you are a start-up that requires no outside funding, and have a great idea, I agree, this is a great time. One more reason why I recently launched Confidential Counselor (www.confidentialcounselor.com) to work with small businesses and start-ups.

BTW, if you are wondering why I bring the Fed's and pols into this, one of Microsoft's biggest early customers was the Federal Government :-)

Re: James Siminoff

Whether its perception or reality, when people like me think of AT&T, the first reactions are dropped calls, calls with echo and tinny sound quality, and fast-busy (network not available) signals. Is this right? Probably not, but, they have had their issues in the past (hopefuly), and, for better or worse, VZW does a great PR job along these lines.

As great as iPhone sales are, if I were the CMO, I would make it possible for people like me to rent an iPhone for a week before going through the hassle of porting my number over.

Re: James Siminoff

I saw a commerical today for Nationwide insurance where they are now offering an iPhone app for their service. As I understand it, if you are their customer, and in an auto accident, you can do all the reporting right from the scene directly from the iPhone via their application. I am still a VZW devotee, but, as more and more apps are rolled out, it gets harder to ignore AT&T and the iPhone. As for Sprint --- between them and tMobile, they are really pushing the boulder up the hill.
