Some thoughts / questions / nitpicks:

1) does Soundscan include iTunes sales, or only track physical sales from the Best Buys & Targets of the world?
2) given the SRP spike that's occurred w/ CDs over the past 9+ years, isn't just looking @ straight sales numbers missing a lot of the bigger (or not-so-big) picture?
3) do we really need to officially state that big sales numbers either come from established sellers or pan-flashes? where else are they going to come from?
4) never underestimate the urban appeal of Metallica and Hinder

In a March 2007 memo, Mark Penn, Clinton's former chief strategist, wrote, "all of these articles about his boyhood in Indonesia and his life in Hawaii are geared toward showing his background is diverse, multicultural and putting that in a new light. Save it for 2050," according to Atlantic magazine writer Joshua Green.

News of this memo came out in August, though, which (again) does me no good wrt to my conception of what happened. But, hey, love seeing that "being American" meme rear its Putin-esque head again.

At any rate, yeah, it's not necessarily racist to make that sort of observation, but it needs to be delicately phrased, especially given that, as much as one could try to downplay it and rise above and put focus back on the issues @ hand, race was going to be an unavoidable topic during this election. To use a belabored sports metaphor (because hey why not): Bill probably knew he shouldn't go there, but he did anyway, and he got T'd up for it.

I really wish there was some sort of timeline out on the tubes for this stuff.

Not to threaten the sanctity of our fresh-from-the-oven peace accord, but something about this assertion doesn't pass the smell test. From what I remember, I thought the "racism!" claims stemmed from more than a few incidents or pull-quotes (from the Clintons or Clinton supports like Geraldine Ferraro) that pre-dated or happened around the JJ comments. Of course, my Google-fu (and my flim-flamming job) is failing me, as I can't seem to find proof to back my ass up.

Haha -- yeah, in the posting afterglow, I thought to myself, "well, gee, i think I might've done what I'm accusing BS of doing!" And those "so there!" rhetorical flourishes didn't do me any favors, either. Also, I forgot a "didn't" in my "deign to speak up comment," which is what I get for proofreading while watching Greg Oden dunk a lot.

I'm still leery of thumbs-uping Howler's anti-Marshall Plan (and his seeming tendency to pick any and all fights regardless of weight class, which you mention in your conclusion), and I should've noted (if only for my own piece of mind) that I myself tune into TPM more for the non-Marshall content on Election Central & Muckracker (tho not the Cafe -- eurgh). And I might have a few more caveats in addition. (& thanks for the MM recommendation -- I read their stuff briefly once upon a time, but just added them back to my RSS a few days ago, thanks in no small part to the aforementioned Ms. Somerby.)

In conclusion, it's all good -- glad to have the discussion. Like you & Mike, I think we're going to the same church, even if we prefer different sorts of services. I think I'll mothball my Cap'n Save a Jo(sh) campaign for a while (and maybe, I dunno, put these energies into writing for my "day job"). Next time I see you, the Sparx (or Shirley Temples) are on me.

By "the audience," I hope you mean "Kevin Barnes' off-kilter sense of critical entitlement," because Adam's review bends over backwards to be even-handed. To wit (from the review's last paragraph):

"Ultimately Skeletal Lamping registers as a misstep, but not without loads of silver lining. For one, Kevin Barnes has established himself as the anti-Christ to the polite, erudite indie world, and for all this album's shortcomings, it's a breath of fresh air for those bored by ivory tower indie rock."

The only way you can twist yourself around and actually argue that AM "put very little thought into writing about the work" is if you actually think Of Montreal (or any group) has earned some sort of unspoken Rolling-Stone-reviews-Bjork score bump within the critical fraternity that supercedes actually discussing the record's finer points and (heaven forbid!) flaws.

Hey now! I'm saving myself for marriage!

As a cockeyed optimist, I'd like to think that readers (of TPM and the Howler and other newsy blogs) take what's said by anyone outside the auspices of straight-up reporting (which I don't think covers "responding to an e-mail") (and even straight-up reportage deserves some skepticism) w/ a grain of salt.

That said, BS' particularly fervent (& seemingly frequent -- 103 Google dings for "daily howler" "josh marshall"!!) Marshall-aimed bitchslaps lose their sting and potency after a while, and what means to be studious ombudsmanship is looking like get-off-my-lawn crabbiness. But I have a low tolerance for this sort of constant haranguing, no matter how good the intentions (unless I'm the one making the hay).

PS -- That said, I hope the Howler gets to read & react to today's Kos post calling Obama a hypocrite if he forgives and hand-slaps Joementum while letting all Bush staffers go.

PPS -- For giggles, wrasslin' w/ Marshall's "Arab terrorist" gaffe.
