As irony goes, your efforts to kill the merger with bremerton may lead to closing fire stations to make ends meet, I only hope its your station and not mine!

Re: Coppola caricature reflects merchant's displeasure with 'Paint the Town' - Port Orchard Independent

I think the small mindedness of the bakery will be it's eventual doom, I love the bread, its the best, but without growth we all die, so lets get it going, not attack leaders who have created a vision...I also resent the italian slur, that is wrong! I will shop at the Gig Harbor and Poulsbo bakery until you grow up!

Re: What’s ‘appropriate’ EMS service, and can we afford it? - Port Orchard Independent

I understand this issue and have looked into it pretty closely. This is a great deal for citizens who live in this community and expect reasonable services, even after we pass this EMS levy we will still enjoy the lowest rate of fire and EMS tax! I am not willing to leave 1.3 million of federal grant money on the table when we really need to add the additional resources anyway, I think this is no brainer YES!

Re: SK Chief explains levy - Port Orchard Independent

In this climate of economy it is fitting that we reward those who have earned our trust in providing critical community services the way this community really wants them, SKFR is the most open and honest government program I have ever seen....they have hit another home run with me on the EMS levy plan, thanks to the elected Fire Commissioners for making great decisions unlike some of their brainless peers!

Re: Even in lean times, safety has to be our first consideration - Port Orchard Independent

Healthy skepticism is always good, but when the source is credible it is difficult to impune without revealing your insincerity for the community. I read the report on-line for the number of 911 calls for help compared to the number FF's and it is very telling. (www.skfr.org) Population increases MAY be the cause for the increase but that is only a guess. The source for calls is CenCom and SKFR and they match. I trust these sources. SKFR is the only tax that acually lowerd on my tax bill from 2007 to 2008. The comparable departments are north kitsap, poulsbo and central. These are similar to south (not big cities) and those citizens pay more and get more. Do the math, even after I calculate the increase SKFR is requesting we still pay less and get nearly the same service, that spells value for us. To not renew the EMS levy would be to cut the SKFR staff by 30 members, that would be sick for this community, its not empire building. Get your facts and put aside your anti-everything rhetoric. Perhaps you could fund essential services by starting a new group, CAVE (citizens against virtually everything) charge dues and provide your contracted fire, school and road maintentance programs.......who wants to be chair? chuckles to ya!!

Re: Even in lean times, safety has to be our first consideration - Port Orchard Independent

sara, what do you mean?

Re: Even in lean times, safety has to be our first consideration - Port Orchard Independent

According to the article, looks like District 7 has an 8-10 minute response goal and they are not meeting that, looks like they are close to 14 minutes in the sub-urban areas of Manchester (see www.skfr.org) , seems that the national standard to save a life is 4 minutes....seems to me that 8-10 minutes is a rural response. I think they are just trying to keep up as close as they can without having 20 minute response times. I couldn't imagine having to answer that mothers question in the article...that would be hard!

Re: Even in lean times, safety has to be our first consideration - Port Orchard Independent

you are a pig

Re: Even in lean times, safety has to be our first consideration - Port Orchard Independent

Chief and the SKFR Firefighters are doing a great job and we will show our support for them come May. If I read the posts right, some of the most frequent posters don't even live in my community.....must have an ax to grind as the outer stated, really turns us off to anything he says. I will support the SKFR levy because I am informed on the issue, I have no ax to grind, I just work for a living and know that we have a very good department compared to many around us. I just wish others would take the time to study the issue vs. spreading hate and discontent, Happy MLK day all!

Re: SKFR resorting to scare tactics again - Port Orchard Independent

So what do these defibrilators cost? If we put one beside every portable fire extinguisher , what would the total cost be. There are about 1500 businesses and about 30, 000 homes in SK, what would the total cost be? How would that compare to what SKFR offers now and plans to offer? I'll bet it would cost more than the increase for the EMS levy and once they are shocked back to life then what? Who would we call and how long would it take them to get to us? I have heard of the "golden hour" before regarding survivabilty and getting stabilizing care and transport to a hospital within one hour means the stats to live go way up. That makes sence to me. Harrison is very good with their heart program but they are quite a distance away. Defibs are good, but they aren't cardic surgeons!

Re: Fire chief just preying on our fears - Port Orchard Independent

I plan to live in SK for the rest of my life and I want to make sure we have a reasonable response to emergencies in my community. SKFR has demonstrated their willingness to make cuts when needed and focus on response. I read their web site and the slight increase will keep response times at a reasonable level. I was amazed at how few EMTs Bremerton and SKFR have when compared to population served and the 911 calls each year, these guys and gals do a tremendous job, which I wittnessed personally last year when they came to our call for help, they actually saved a life and the Doctor at the hospital confirmed that they did exactly that, I thank them for what they do and support the EMS tax.

Re: Chief says levy failure would be devastating to SKFR - Port Orchard Independent

I plan to live in SK for the rest of my life and I want to make sure we have a reasonable response to emergencies in my community.
