What if my beliefs are PRO-woman, PRO-birth control? No one is forcing YOU to do anything. Dems are not restricting anyone; they are giving freedom to people to live their lives as they choose. Repubs/Catholics/religious extremists are the one trying to dictate how others live their lives, imposing their beliefs on everyone. Not the other way around.

I don't see how this would solve the problem, though I do usually like/reblog before I promote. The solution, if people are upset and think you're promoting your own posts, is to clarify that Tumblr has already blocked editors from doing so.

I'm glad to hear it was a misunderstanding, although I still argue it is indicative of the culture at the club. Not everything is reversible. You can't always switch a situation and say, "Well, if a the woman were a man, and the man were a woman, and this occurred, it would be sexism, too!" Same with racism. There are structures of power set up such that the default is a white, straight, Christian man's America, and therefore the white, straight, Christian man's America is the place that women and minorities are constantly fighting to enter, because that is where power lies. So, no, I don't think that organizations set up by historically marginalized groups is the same thing. There are very few enclaves of society where white, straight, Christian men are excluded, and you will notice that they are not exactly fighting to gain entree into these other groups, because the power and privilege associated with membership to an exclusively male or exclusively white club is not granted to those who are members of other organizations.

I worked with the facts I had at the time. I read all I could find on the topic at the time. Yes, if I had been psychic, I would have made a different argument. You, however, did not even bother to find out what women's sports organization's policies are regarding reporters in locker rooms, information that exists on the internet and has existed for quite a while now.

That's all I have to say. You may disagree, and that is fine. It is a privilege to exist in a world where privilege does not exist, does not rear its ugly head every single day. That appears to be the world you live in, according to things you have said in the past. Congrats, dude. Enjoy it.

Then they should not allow ANY reporters into the locker rooms. And, yes, barring women from even entering a men's locker room -- when allowing female reporters in a men's locker room is a COMMON practice throughout the sports reporting world* -- ON TOP OF excluding women from joining the club is indeed, hateful.

I am not an athlete, so my personal opinion does not matter; I am not in that situation, so I cannot speak to it. Professional female athletic associations, however, are NOT hypocritical: "The WNBA has the same rules as the NBA. Open locker rooms at designated times. In the NCAA tournament, the same rules govern both men and women's locker rooms -- they're both open at specific times. During the regular season, NCAA institutions can make their own rules about locker room availability, but during the tournament the NCAA has a uniform policy. When Stanford played UConn in last April's championship, if you wanted to see how devastated Jayne Appel was after her terrible shooting night, you needed to be in the locker room. I was there. MAYBE it's sexist? For chrissakes, the fact that she is a woman prevented her from doing her job, from having the same access afforded her male colleagues. What the fuck is that if not discrimination based on sex -- you know, the *definition* of sexism?

I don't. I only watch YouTube clips when I hear Fox anchors are being particularly ignorant or offensive or blindly idealogical (see above). Fox News beats other cable news -- CNN, MSNBC, HLN -- because the other three split the liberal/rational viewership. As for network news -- ABC, NBC, CBS -- they dominate cable news. As in, each network averages around 8 million viewers a night for their news programs, compared to cable news primetime shows, which are lucky to get 2 or 3 million. Where are you getting your numbers? Fox News?

Unless I'm horribly mistaken, ALL Alabama state documents ARE in English. They are then sometimes translated into other languages to ease the already complicated process of filling out government forms.

I was at the DMV in my state the other day and had to wait longer in line because a non-native English speaker did not understand the form he had to fill out. This man spoke English quite well, but he had trouble reading English. Had the form been in Spanish, his native language, chances are he would have understood it completely. It isn't like this is costing the state of Alabama exorbitant amounts of money to translate and copy a few forms. In fact, it is probably saving them time and money by making it easier for everyone to understand.

Also, if Tim James wants everyone in Alabama to learn English, how does he expect people to learn English when they can't get a driver's license to drive to, I don't know, ENGLISH CLASSES? Or even to their jobs?

The only "validity" to the idea of making all state documents in English and only in English is racism and xenophobia.

Those are the only "Hollywood celebrities" I saw on the list. So, actually, no. That isn't the case. And the amount Oprah gives away is staggering to you and me, but relative to her net worth? Let's just say she probably isn't missing that money. She still keeps herself firmly in the Forbes Top 400 Wealthiest Americans.

The two are not mutually exclusive. Diversity of gender and race would lead to diversity of opinions, since both influence the way we experience the world. And diversity of opinions is much more subjective and therefore harder to quantify and compare. Although it is certainly worth looking into.

Of course, if you truly want to raise the level of discourse and discuss quality content, I suggest you begin by not making ad hominem attacks (i.e. "namecalling") on those who are trying to start a discussion.

Yes, you're right. Defining "healthy" within such narrow margins and flawed systems like BMI is reductive and inaccurate. One person's normal is different from another's. Why people insist we all be cookie-cutter clones of one another, I'll never know.

I agree with what you're saying. People are fat for many reasons. I myself do in fact have hypothyroidism, which is genetic and something that cannot be fixed with diet and exercise. I was speaking to why we, as Americans, are generally more obese than almost any other nation. And that, I believe, is because of the food industry, which makes it nearly impossible to truly eat healthfully, and because studies show we are among the least active countries in the world. But I'm well aware that one can diet and exercise every day and not lose weight. Been there, done that. I appreciate your feedback, and I'm sorry if I was not as clear as I could have been.
