Truly the end of an era.

As someone who's had the privilege to see you add an extra bit of laughter and light to the lives of so many women (and those of us men lucky enough to be spotted by Christie and Jess), I must admit to a bit of mist in my eyes reading this.

Thanks for everything! See you at the reunion party, on my yacht or yours. No tan jackets allowed.

Re: Couch of Christie: Fall and Love (or the Secret of Thanksgiving)

Great piece, very sweet.

Re: Hiring via API

Agree completely Matt ... now let me into the Ship private beta! ;)

Re: Coffee House Talks: If this past week has taught us anything, it's that the GOP has entrenched itself as the party of hate

I literally couldn't agree more.

Re: Ask Jess: There Is No Reason That You’re Single

Great article, Jess!

Re: BP stanches the gushing of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, begins pressure testing

"In all seriousness, this process has been very poorly handled by BP, and the part where they come out of as heroes for fixing their own disaster is infuriating."

I agree. For instance, if you add a field called "lname" to your database, that doesn't have any intrinsic meaning to any system in the real world except perhaps your own.

With RDF, on the other hand, you can say lname owl:equivalentProperty foaf:lastName. Suddenly systems that know what foaf:lastName is actually know what "lname" is. I'd call that a killer feature.

Re: Why does the Semantic Web feel so over-engineered?

"how about if we make things simple now, and add complexity later if we see we need the complexity?"

OK, but what competent ontologist actually disagrees with this? As a matter of fact, this is the best practice for developing an ontology. You're supposed to start with an existing ontology that is a "decent fit" for your use case and then only specify new properties and classes as you need them. Even when you specify new properties and classes, you're supposed to anchor them to those of existing ontologies. How is this over-engineered?

Re: Tar balls found off Key West, FL suspected to be from BP Oil Disaster

Interesting, I'll look that up and update the post. Strangely enough, I just heard today that the oil has been confirmed to have hit the Loop Current. So I'll need to investigate and make sense of what's going on ...

Re: Joe Sestak defeats Arlen Specter in PA Democratic Senate Primary

Plus there were local factors. Specter's campaign very much felt like big city machine politics out of Philadelphia and Washington, whereas Sestak's campaign felt a lot more like that of a traditional PA grassroots Democrat.

Subsequently, Sestak destroyed Specter in Allegheny County, Lawrence County, and pretty much all of Western Pennsylvania (where I'm from).

I think Obama saw the handwriting on the wall and wisely stayed out of it near the end. He was in Youngstown, OH yesterday (just a few miles from Western PA), yet he specifically did not stump at all for Specter.

Re: Joe Sestak defeats Arlen Specter in PA Democratic Senate Primary

I think there are too many confounding variables to tell much of anything for sure. :)

That said, Arlen was unbelievably brazen in how he described his party switch when he made it. At the time, I specifically thought "He's gonna get wrecked with this in the primary." Sure enough, he did. He had the lead until this ad came out with that footage.
