Hindsight here is 20/20 but if he had an InReach pocket communicator they would have got him. If it was possible for authorities to track his phone signal even without a tower.  A rescuer could mimic a mobile tower with a  backpack setup .  Here in Alberta there is a lot of territory to get lost in.
