I feel like our generation is too transfixed by the trappings of attraction and the promise of fucking to look for this, and then expect to find validation of themselves in someone else. When you know yourself well enough to look for this from the beginning, all the rest comes naturally. At least I hope it does. Then again, I have an awesome track record for seeing this in men who can't or won't see it in themselves.

Re: Summer Anne's Best 125 Songs of the 2000s: #101

Me too, me too.

Re: SUPERSEDED

This just made me cry. Seriously. I love the view toward the front door.

Last night I went into Manhattan with Michaela to go to the Whole Foods in Tribeca. We'd been working on knitting stuff all day. (For most people, it would be past the point of spending too much time with your roommate/BFF.) Legend had it that the WFM Tribeca was "big." It was like walking into WFM in Austin, and it's situated at an intersection at such an angle that it feels like 6th and Lamar. At one point, while loitering in the bulk department, I said to Michaela "do you get the feeling that if we walk out the front door, go across the street, and make a right, we'll find ourselves at BookPeople? And maybe Summer will be there. They'd totally hold our bags at loss control."

I'm missing Austin a lot right now. Last night I wanted nothing more than to go to Emo's...about 5 years ago.

Re: the rich girls are weeping take notes

Thanks Sherry! Are you talking ease or +/- measurement off your specs?

It's the exhaustive vocabulary and technical expertise that I lack. Right now, machine knitting is not for me or what what Cindy and I do. We actually just sold our machine to a textile designer. I feel too removed from the process. I enjoy creating each and every stitch. Where I miss out is speed. I handknit at 7+ stitches per inch, usually with 3-4 ends of 2/18 - 2/20 production quality merino. Sure, doing custom work is grand, but where we're really trying to focus our effort is an intro collection of foundation patterns and developing a marketable way to interpret bleeding edge menswear and unisex knits for patterns. ...without Wenlan Chia's budget or cutesiness. It's a hard row to hoe.

I do have one designer friend who keeps saying "more, more," which is both helpful and inspiring. It's just a little hard to hear a pin drop in NYC when we talk about design, considering that it sounds like a gaggle of geese when we show actual garments to anyone we speak with. It seems like something is lost in translation, but the last thing I want is to be seen as is a crafter.

Re: prettylegit - When it comes to fonts, if it came printed on...

I think there's a special circle of hell for that. I didn't say that there was anything wrong with tee-shirts. Additionally, there's no point in dressing if you do it for other people. I did quit wearing heels every day when I started working in this building, but I don't separate "finery" from work-clothes. I do, however, understand there are some people who feel they have to do so.

I probably should have concluded the original post with a statement about the fact that you guys aren't the kind of guys who are going to wear a tie to work. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that or with what any of you wear to work. I'm sorry that my original statement conveyed that idea poorly. I didn't intend to offend anyone, but the reality is that I did, and I apologize for that.

Re: This one's for Cintra Wilson and All the Overly Sensitive People Offended By Her Latest Critical Shopper Column in the New York Times

I'm not sure that holding up Strawberry or Conway as representative of places to get quality extended size garments is helpful. The quality for ready-to-wear (particularly in plus sizes) that has become acceptable in the last 20 years since the largescale outsourcing of garment work is pretty deplorable. It's also the level in which Strawberry and Conway trade. The New York Look, however, should be mentioned as a catch-all small department store carrying high quality garments, but most of the companies represented in their stock rarely offer sizes larger than 14. The reason that these weren't covered or mentioned is that they HAVE been around for some time, while Critical Shopper is dedicated to newer options.

It's interesting that JC Penney was replaced by Target. That's happened a lot in Texas as well; not necessarily direct replacements, but Target succeeds where Jacques Penné fails. Mainly because Target is able to offer higher quality merchandise with faster turnaround. That goes for housewares as well. And I'm not sure how or why this happens, because many of Target's sourcing and manufacturing locations are in the same locale as JC Penney's: China.

As someone from rural East Texas, a place often rightfully characterized by stereotypes of slothful obesity coupled with religious and political conservatism and a proliferation of Wal-Mart locations, I have to say that prime Wal-Mart clientele and JC Penney clientele go hand-in-hand and often include the un-acknowledged office workers you mentioned above. You buy what's available unless you have the time and mobility to look outside of that. Until Wal-Mart and the attendant death of the small town department store that Cindy mentioned, lower middle class shoppers still had access to quality goods.

Re: This one's for Cintra Wilson and All the Overly Sensitive People Offended By Her Latest Critical Shopper Column in the New York Times

The most shocking revelation that I've taken away from this entire discussion is that people are so invested in their own self-loathing and/or fat pity that they can't see that Wilson's comment about being able to "do better for $80" indicated that she has a problem with this because a size 18 should be able to do the same. What's more is that a size 18 absolutely can do better, especially in New York, but the majority of plus size women settle for what they can get rather than making the same commitment to quality garments that smaller women seem to be expected to make. This can be easily done via better department stores like Macy's, which has a really awesome women's department which, for in many cases, mirrors the garments available on the missy and junior floors. I could also further qualify this by saying that the majority of which I speak is mostly white, as are most women begging for fat acceptance. Show me a sweeping cross-section of women of color who feels victimized or marginalized by their size, and I'll give you a dollar.

I'm also more than a little miffed at the fact that Jezebel commenters are so blinded by group discourse and quick to jump on the Beth-Ditto-Is-a-Token bandwagon that the sarcasm inherent in Wilson's statement mentioning Ditto goes unseen. Anyone up in arms over that just let Wilson push their buttons by calling them on their own issues. Ditto is as much a token of fat acceptance as she is of diversity inclusion.

Re: Gee, this castle looks familiar...

Manning up would simply entail being a man, which is something that I feel is lost in our generation...especially to many men I know here. It's not about being "masculine." It's more about a man having ideas and following through on them, doing what he says he's going to do instead of talking about it endlessly, not being threatened by women with careers and self esteem, not being threatened by adult responsibilities, understanding that accepting adult responsibilities doesn't mean that he's turning into his father or has to be a father, etc. Maybe it's my thing for men with artistic temperaments, but it's almost easier to deal with the occasional substance abuse issues than with the Peter Panitude.

Re: the rich girls are weeping take notes

This is why you're my friend: you will always watch TCM with me.
